Firelight stood protectively over the dragon at her feet.
"I said, you can't take her." She spat.

The other SkyWing hardly flinched. Eldin repeated himself.
"And I said, she is defective. This tribe isn't going to carry that cripple around. They have no place here; same with the firescales and magical ones."

Firelight stepped past the sleeping dragonet. Advancing towards Eldin, she kept her smoking snarl, although her eyes were full of fear. They shimmered on the brink of tears, growing desperate.
"Din, I can't lose this one."

Eldin looked no less cold-shoulder. "You were always a problem-mother, weren't you? I promise it won't happen again, we'll remove you from the breeding program. No more cripples, no more having to lose them."

The larger SkyWing pushed past Firelight towards the dragonet.

"Please, you can't take her!"

"And why can't I?"

"You've taken every other dragonet from me, Din. Every single one, and they were all family."

The last word hit Din like a charging MudWing. It was one he hadn't heard in a long time.

Firelight's legs wobbled. She sobbed and pleaded. "Please, Din... I swear she's good... She's ohana, remember? The word that RainWing told us about."
The SkyWing mother collapsed to the ground, crying. She reached out in front of her, reaching for her daughter.
"My only family left. It's little, and broken, but still good..."

"Still good"

"Still good"
