Sophie's POV

*

"Why did you leave there?" He asks me.

These questions are necessary but they don't stop me from feeling uneasy. I know I can't be totally honest, in as much as I want to be but I need to earn his trust first.

After all, I'll be watching over his daughter from now on and her safety would be my top priority henceforth.

He looked convinced when I told him I had siblings earlier on and I hope I don't screw things up now.

I wonder what happened with his wife, he looks young. They probably divorced or something. Approximately, I'd say he is in his middle or late twenties.

Then his question registers and I take a gulp. I have to be as discrete as possible.

"My parents died in a car accident and I went to stay with my uncle but..." I say the last part slowly, my eyes glazing over as the image of my step dad pinning me down to the bed flashes.

If I didn't want to tell a lie before, this just gave me the confidence to do so.

"But what?" He asks with a suspicious gaze burning into my skin.

"He tried to erm...assault me..." This detail is probably too personal and I'm just meeting him but I don't care. I need the job. Maybe pity would make it work. "He tried it thrice. I ran away the third time and-"

"Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that. So you'll be staying here?" He asks quickly, as if he's trying to make up for the question he asked earlier on.

"If that's alright with you. Just let me know if you'll deduct it from my salary."

"Uh.. Don't worry. I'll say you have the two weeks opportunity to prove yourself and if you can, then you can as well consider yourself a permanent employee." He says with a shrug, a small smile playing at the side of his lips. I wonder if he pitied me because of my story and decided to help.

That's my goal isn't it?

My eyes flash with irritation and I shut my eyes.

No, he shouldn't pity me.

I don't need anyone doing that because it leaves me feeling unnecessarily vulnerable, as if I should really be subjected to pity.

I'm not an object of pity. I'll get through whatever battle that comes my way.

Still I keep quiet, pursing my lips for some seconds.

"Thanks then."

Then his face forms a serious expression. "On most occasions, I'll be leaving you to take care of Oli while I attend to business matters and such."

"Okay, Oli." I test the name on my tongue. It is pronounced like horley.

"She is a handful and I don't want any complaints regarding her. She is smarter than she let's on and easily notices things, so her report of any uncalled for behaviour could as well mean termination of your services here." He tells me strictly.

My head bobs up and down in understanding, trying to keep track of the changes in his expression as he switches them easily. From strict to understanding, then to pity and now back to stern, wow.

"I promise I'll do everything necessary and won't give her a reason to complain."

"I hope you do."

His gaze flickers from my face to my whole body, as if accessing me and I squirm in the chair.
