Sophie's POV

*

"Let's stop to get ice cream." I tell Oli as we exit the bookstore and walk through the large walkway among several other people.

We came here to buy some story books for her and novels for myself. I love Mario Puzzo and James Hadley the most, they just keep me thinking about what their next step will be in their book plots. So thrilling!

"That girl is attending my school!" She points at a girl about two years older than her, who is walking with a baldheaded man.

"That's great." I state. I can't push enthusiasm into my voice at the moment, so I don't bother. I want to get our books so we can leave and decide our next destination.

Oli's school, like all other primary schools, is currently on midterm break so we decided to keep ourselves busy by reading books.

Also I want to buy some textbooks because I'll be resuming in the university soon. This was all thanks to my lovely boyfriend and I couldn't be more grateful to him.

I already went to do my registration but I'm not resuming until next month and the university isn't far from our place so Demola will be taking me there some mornings and other times, I'll just take public transport.

"Do you want ice cream?" I ask Oli.

She looks up at me and I give her a small smile. She looks really charming and I can't believe I'm dating her handsome dad. People have mistaken her for my daughter or younger sister but I don't bother correcting them because Oli is always eager to tell them I'm her new mommy whenever they ask in curiosity.

Personally though, I think this is none of their business. Most of the people that have asked are old women who are curious as to how someone who looks as young as me would be the mother of Oli. Damn pocknosers.

"Yes I do. We'll also get for daddy right?"

"Sure Oli. We'll get enough for the three of us."

"Do you know my dad likes it when I buy him things? Like candies and chocolates? When he takes me to the store, I buy him things and he always looks happy to pay for them." She states proudly which makes me giggle because he's literally the one buying himself things since he's paying for them.

I love Oli's protective nature towards her dad.

Anyone that tries to come between them two would have to face Oli's wrath. She's so possessive of him.

I'm surprised she doesn't seem to mind when her dad asks me some questions whenever we are eating because when I first started living with them, she would throw me death glares whenever her dad asked me any type of question on my likes and dislikes. Even if the question was about if I was enjoying my stay or needed help with anything around the house, she would still bare her gums at me like a vampire.

Believe me, that's scary.

She didn't even like the idea that I sat at the dining with them at that time.

I snigger. "Who pays for the things you buy?"

"My dad will give me the money and I'll pay. I'm not working so he gives me so much change to keep in case I need it." She grins at her own smartness and winks.

"Really?" I okay along.

"Yes. Like this." She gestures with her five fingers stretched out. "Five hundred naira. That usually gets us more than enough goodies."

"Then you'll give me some money too." I pout.

"Sure. I want to tell you something."

Looking down at her occasionally, I keep moving closer to her when I notice someone is barging our way. I wouldn't like them bumping into us and passing between us because we are holding hands.

"Tell me, dear."

She smiles. "Daddy likes it when I tell him I love him. Do you also tell him how much you love him?"

I stare down at her as she gives me a smile before crouching to her level and adjusting her blazer.

"Uh.. I'll carry you as we cross the road." I clear my throat and straighten up, walking to the counter to pay for our things.

She nods. "Okay."

That's how easy it is for her to forget she even asked me a question. Children and their ways.

I shake my head.

I carry her in a piggy back style and cross the road with other pedestrians, dropping her when we're about to enter KFC.

We make our way in and take short glances left and right till I get to the counter.

"Two plates of ice cream."

"Good morning ma'am. What size?"

"Good morning. Medium." I point at the size I want.

"Flavour?"

"Vanilla and strawberry for the first plate, chocolate and vanilla for the second one. Both in two equal halves."

"One thousand two hundred naira ma'am." She types on the computer before her.

"Sure

The Lady goes to the back and comes back with two frozen plates in hand. She packages them in two takeaway nylons and I receive it, exiting with Oli.

"Are we still going to daddy's place?" She asks, squinting due to the effect of the sun as we stroll through the walkway back to the zebra-crossing.

It's just ten thirty in the morning but the shining sun would make one think it's already afternoon. The blazing sun is practically roasting our skins.

I take my handkerchief from my back pocket and clean the few drops of sweat on her forehead.

I've not seen someone that sweats as much as Oli does.

"Uh...I told you we would be going there right?"

"Yes you did." She nods.

"Then we'll go."

"Yay! Sophie is the best!" She giggles.

We hail a taxi.

"Where to?" The taxi driver asks. He is wearing a cleric cap and has a long moustache.

"Pierce William's company."

"Alright." He replies and reduces the local music being played as we both settle in.

Oli looks around and dangles her legs. She must be happy, because she doesn't get to go out so much because of schooling.

"How are you enjoying the weather ma'am?" The driver asks as the different buildings around us pass fleetingly due to the speed of the taxi.

I shrug and adjust Sophie's hair so it's no longer tucked into her neck while she keeps glancing around every now and then.

"It's fair enough, sunny and cool. As long as someone doesn't stay in it for too lon to avoid sunburns."

He laughs and begins to hum the song as I and Sophie whisper to each other and anticipate our visit to Demola's office.
