Bryne and I woke up in my room. We must've been asleep for hours. It was nighttime already, and I was starving. Bryne stared at me.

"Does your side still hurt?" I asked, worried.

"No," she answered, and I sighed in relief. "I guess what happens in Minecraft stays in Minecraft."

I walked into my closet and pulled out two bags of Cheetos that I had hidden in case I got hungry in the middle of the night. I sat down on my bed and handed one to Bryne. She opened it and stuffed about five Cheetos into her mouth.

"What?" she asked, her voice muffled through the Cheetos. "I was hungry, don't judge me."

"Not judging you," I said, smiling.

We sat in my room for about ten minutes, eating out Cheetos and reading some books. Bryne closed her book and sighed.

"Tommy, what if we didn't stop Herobrine?" she asked. "What if he escaped? What if we just single-handedly put all of NYC in danger?"

"Stop thinking about the 'what-ifs,'" I told her. "Thinking about what could happen just increases fear."

"I know, but seriously. I mean, how does your dad know how to destroy a virus?"

"He doesn't," I said. "All he's doing is smashing the computer that Herobrine was stuck in."

"Speaking of that, shouldn't we have heard it if he did do it?"

I sat up from my book. "Oh my gosh, you're right."

Bryne and I stared at each other for about eight solid seconds. Then, we sprinted downstairs so quickly you'd think we were running a marathon.

"Dad!" I yelled, at the same time that Bryne said, "Mr. Feynman!"

And then we both said, at the same time, "Did he escape?"

But Dad wasn't near the computer. And the computer was still there. We turned the corner. Dad and Jenny, my sister, were sitting on the green couch. Dad had his face in his hands, and Jenny was leaning on him, crying.

Bryne and I walked over to them. "What happened?" Bryne asked. "Did you do it? Did we win?"

Jenny looked at Bryne and shook her head.

"Herobrine escaped? Is he here? In the physical world?"

Jenny nodded.

Bryne took a step back and fell on the floor, like the shock of it had made her legs give out. I sat on the couch next to Dad.

"He got out before I could smash the hard drive," he said. "I couldn't do anything. Tommy...I'm sorry."

"It's not your fault," I said.

I looked around the room. Herobrine has escaped. He's in the real world. He'll cause so much more trouble than ever before. This is all my fault. I should've defeated him.

"I've failed."
