Chapter 10: SECRET MEETING

 “It’s rather cold out here.”

Napalingon ako. Nakita ko si Duke na nakahilig sa malapit na puno ng niyog. Komportableng-komportable ito. Nilalaro ng hangin ang crow-colored hair nito.

May mga strands na pilit kumakapit sa nakakaakit nitong mata. Mga mata na kulay ng pasig noong kay linaw at linis pa ang kondisyon nito. Mga tingin nito na parang inaalam lahat ng sekreto ko.

“I’m simply gathering data.”

“Oh?” Aroganteng sabi nito. Unting naramdaman ko ang pagpintig ng ulo ko sa sakit.

“Guests would expect a lovely night, with a view that would be relaxing and refreshing. The ambiance  that would reach out to them to take a lovely stroll by the sea.”

“A lovely picture. You must have imagined it a lot of times. So who’s the unlucky chap?”

“Chap? Your grace, you’ve mistaken my preferrence. You should be able to tell that i’ve been imagining that scene with Christine in mind.”

“hmmm. If that is so, then why haven’t you taken her on a walk right now?”

Tsk. Hindi ako makasagot. Tumayo ito ng maayos. Sumilay ang isang maasim na ngiti sa mukha nito.

“I look at you and I can feel that wretched heart of yours. Even if you try, your lies do not work on me.” Lumapit ito sa akin at nilagay ang kamay sa baba ko at sapilitang pinatingin ako sa kanya. “Your eyes tell me how sinister you are madam.”

“Sinister. Hmmmm. How sad. Hindi sa nagmamagaling ako pero parang hindi lang sa akin nababagay.” Tinulak ko ang kamay nito. “I do not see why you hate me so much. You’re as sinister as i am. Maybe even worse. It should be proper if we become friends.”

“Huwag mo akong itulad sa iyo. You opportunist!”

Aray naman. Alam ko naman na totoo. Pero bakit mas masakit kung naririnig galing sa taong ito. Hindi ako magpapatalo. Mas lalo akong lumapit. Dinaganan ko ang kamay ko sa dibdib nito at pataas. Dinamdam ko ang leeg nito at nakita ko ang pagtaas-baba ng adams apple nito.

“I did like a guy once. I met him in high school. He was smart, handsome and painstakingly rich. I on the other hand had nothing of the three. But nonetheless i was determined. In our school we had this top 50 chart that hung on the bulletin board from a test given to all year levels. The question were the same so there’s usually a mix of year-levels in that list.

Ever since first year, he was always no. 1. I never got on the list but during my last year i was determined. I studied day in and day out. My only source of strength was a picture of him kept in my wallet. I made it. The happiest day of my life, I was the 50th. To have my name written in the same sheet as his. It was enough for me.”

“What happened then?”

“Nothing, because it was simply one-sided. I realized after i met Christine why it didn’t work out. It could never have worked out.” Nag-buga ako ng hangin malapit sa tenga niya. Nagulat ito at napaatras. Ngumisi ako ng malapad. “Doubt if you wish. She’s still mine.”

“Ahem.” Sabay kaming napalingon.

“Christine.” Nakiita ko ang galit sa mga mata nito habang nakatingin sa akit. Patay.

“Hmmm... having a secret meeting at night, huh, beloved?” dinig na dinig ko ang galit sa boses nito. Patay na talaga ako.  “Anyways, dinner is ready.” Yun lang at tinalikuran na niya kami.

Regalling with the enemy? How stupid can i get?

“It’s really good to know when to give up. Besides, it’s a good chance to make that guy know  what a great girl you are.”

Bigla akong napaluha. What the? Mainit na luha ang dumagan sa mukha ko. Ang lahat ng sakit na pilit kong tinatago lahat lumalabas. Stupid man. Spouting nonsense. Mabilis kong pinahid ang mga luha.

“Stop talking nonsense. I love Christine. She’s everything to me now. And I won’t be handing her to you so easily.”

Hindi na ako sinagot ni Duke. Nakakunot ang noo nito habang mabilis na iniwan ako.
