Breathing

The lock shut, and she banged her fists on the metal door. "No, no no no no no no!" She yelled.

Wally slowly turned around, a grim look on his face. "We locked in."

"Well no duh, Baywatch." She rolled her eyes.

"Check your com. Is the link still on?" He asked.

Artemis pressed the button to communicate the team, not getting a response. "Nothing. And no, it went down as soon as the door shut." She slid her back down the wall.

"What if we burn to death?" Wally asked.

"We won't burn, if anything the gas'll burst and we'll die from that." She chuckled.

Wally sent her a cold glare. "What, I was joking?"

"Artemis, I don't think you understand the seriousness of this situation." He said, crossing his arms.

"Wally, it's fine, the rest of the team will find us and open the doors." She said.

"But what if they don't." He sighed.

She stood up and walked up to him. "We'll Be Fine."

He frowned. "Hey, I'm gonna go to sleep. Preserve oxygen."

She went to the corner to lay down, and curled up into a ball.

Wally sighed, there had to be a way out of here. The gas pumps ran through the boiler room, and once it overheated, they'd burst like Artemis said. And even though she was sleeping to preserve oxygen, she had a major point. Especially when the gasses would take up most of the space.

He began to start running to find a door, window, something to get them out. Nothing.

He had a small idea on creating a vortex to get the gases together, but then realized that kind of pressure would make the building implode. So he headed back to Artemis, and hoped her idea on the team finding them soon was true.

She was breathing slowly and peacefully, and he wondered how she was so calm. He sat down next to her, and felt the cold floor comfort him in the heat. His panic was rising, and he was so glad this place was big, or else his claustrophobia would set in.

He could feel the heat growing stronger, and with it the amount of oxygen lowering. And they weren't even breathing fast- his little sweep of the boiler room. Increase of breath. He must have breathed enough oxygen for at least seven people for the amount of five minutes each. Approximately 35 minutes of wasted oxygen.

Not much, but in this situation, it counts.

Stop.

He needs to stop. Stop thinking about what would go wrong, it's increasing his oxygen levels, he needs to think about slowing his breathing.

Two minutes later Artemis began to stir, and she woke up fully. "Hey, any word from the team?" She was having short breaths, and she was sure he didn't notice, but he did.

"You ok?" He asked.

"What? I'm f-"

He gave her an icy glare.

She sighed, and her shoulders slumped. "The oxygen levels are dropping, Wally. What do you want me to say?"

He sighed. "I wish they'd find us. I'm starting to worry. And I hate panicking." He smiled.

"It's fine." She nudged him, placing a head on his shoulder.

They sat like that for two more hours. Wally laid his head back on the wall. "A-Artemis?" His breathing was slower, and he made sure spoke slowly.

He coughed, the lack of oxygen was taking toll on his body. "A-Artemis?" He asked again.

"Wallly?" She slurred.

"Stay a-awake. O-ok?" He mumbled.

"Mmm..." She said.

"A-Artemis. Prommiiiseee meeee." He slurred, so dizzy he was sure he'd fall if he stood up.

She looked him in the eye, and the look was heartbreaking to him. It was to show she'd given up, that she wanted him to know she was trying, but she didn't think she'd last much longer awake.

"N-n-no. Stay awake." He said.

She didn't answer. Her eyes were falling, and he jolted awake, despite the exhaustion. "Artemis. Stay. Awake!" He yelled.

"Artemis!" He yelled.

Her body slumped against him. "N-no."

He stood up, lifting her into his arms, and he felt just how slow her chest was rising and falling. It pushed him to move. He stumbled a few steps, but his knees gave out, sending Artemis tumbling to the floor, along with him.

He hated himself for it. For letting her down.

"A-Artemis." He said weakly, intertwine their hands.

"KF?" He heard Robin shouting.

He busted open the door with a small detonated batarang.

He smiled, they'd be ok. "Kid?" He said grabbing onto the edge of the door after it opened to lean on, panting.

"Guys! I found them! Hurry!" He called.

He ran up to them, and checked for a pulse on  Artemis. Wally slowly turned his head, opening his mouth, but no words left his lips.

Robin saw this, and chuckled. "Don't worry KF. She's ok, rest, alright?"

He turned his head again, faintly nodding and keeping their hands locked together. He then closed his eyes. Knowing she's ok.

She was ok. Breathing.

  She was Breathing.
