Self Introductions:
~입니다 (~imnida)– is used to introduce oneself including one’s name, nationality, occupation, etc.
*저(Jeo) and 나(Na)
나 and 저 both mean ‘I’ or ‘me’. 저 is a humble way to say 나.
When you talk to a person who is older or higher position than you or stranger, you have to use 저.
On the other hand, 나 is used for friends (the same age) or a person who is younger than you.
~ 은/는 (eun/neun) are used for:
1. when you introduce a noun(mostly a person) For example, 저는 이민수예요. (Jeo-neun I-Min-su-ye-yo.) I am Lee Minsu. 저는 한국 사람이에요. (Jeo-neun Han-guk sa-ram-i-e-yo.) I am Korean.
Let’s give it a try: 저는 ( name/occupation/age )입니다. / 제 이금은( name/occupation/age )입니다.
( country )에서 왔습니다. / ( country )사람이에요. Note: 에서 (e-seo) it the "in, at, from"
만나서 반갑습니다. / 처음 봽셌습니다.
Occupation: 학생 - Haksaeng - Student 회사원 - Hoesawon - Office Worker/Company Employee 사업자 - Business Person
Degree of Politeness:
존탯말 Polite Honorific (습)니다 / ㅂ니다 Polite Formal Informal Honorific 요 Polite Informal
반말 Casual
Note: Koreans are very particular in acknowledging the status of a person in regards to age, work status and positions in the company. So if you are planning to travel to South Korea by means of becoming a tourist, exchange student, to marry or to work, you must be well aware that what you saw and hear in dramas are not the same in reality where you can just talk to people casually. Always be in the polite side when you are communicating with them(just to be on the safe side). They may understand you since you are a foreigner but that’s not always the case.
