~ Grammar Focus:
1 에 is used mainly with the verbs 가다 (to go), 오다 (to come), 다니다 (to attend/commute), 돌아가다 (to return), 도착하다 (to arrive), 올라가다 (to go up), and 내려가다 (to go down). It expresses the direction in which a particular behavior proceeds. It corresponds to ‘to’ in English.
2 에 is also used with 있다 and 없다 to express the location of a person or thing. It corresponds to ‘in’ or ‘on’ in English.
· 소피 위에 강아지가 있어요. The dog is on the sofa.
· 지금 집에 어머니와 동생이 있어요. Right now my mother and little brother/sister are in the house.
In Conversation:
A 어디에 가요? A Where are you going? B 백화점에 가요. B I’m going to the department store.
A 요코 씨가 새일 파티에 와요? A Is Yoko coming to the birthday party? B 아니요, 안 와요. B No, she isn’t coming.
A 오늘 오후에 뭐해요? A What will you do this afternoon? B 서점에 가요. B I’m going to the bookstore.
