I honestly thought everything was okay. I had an amazing boyfriend, and who was the best and rich. Who would want more? I was the queen of The Remnants and they actually accepted me now that Caitlyn was gone. My gang and school friends were all together and I was doing well in school.
And then came April.
I was sitting in my living room watching Dylan O'Brian when I looked out the window. Across the street, the skeleton of a house still loomed, burnt from who knows what. The Remnants symbol still on the last remaining wall.
I remembered the day I met Death, not Jake. He had sauntered in here and told me about the war, keeping me calm during my panic attack. Come to think of it, what happened to the war? I remember him saying that it was partly my fault, that someone was putting me in danger and I needed protecting-he was the boy to do it.
Wait, what?
If I was the reason, then isn't the war still on? Surely The Hydras-who besides the founders knew of the mythical section of The Remnants - wasn't behind it. Were they still out there or have they given up? Knowing my luck, we all know the answer.
I got up and put Dylan off. I promised to return to him later. I shouted to my mom that I would be back by five and grabbed my keys. I was fifteen, technically not legal, but Jake had bought me my first car: a blue Audi RS7.
I hopped in, revved and soon I was on my way. In these past months, Aeolus City had recovered. Death finally closed the hole to the Underworld, and most of the buildings were rebuilt after they suffered damage. My city was finally upright again. Though how long it will last, well the answer seemed to be imminent.
I parked in the parking lot of Headquarters. It rose tall even when you were right in front of it. People streamed in and out of the entrance like always. Bustling down to the courts, gardens, pools, amphitheater. It was all here at Headquarters.
I walked in to the main room; people greeting me left and right. The first person I saw was my ex-boyfriend, Luke.
"Luke!" I called out to him. He turned and scowled. Things were awkward on his end because I simply ignored the awkwardness on mine.
"Yes, my queen." He gritted out. I laughed.
"I was just wondering what ever happened to the people that were ch-" He suddenly yanked me and pulled me along.
We ran through the halls taking sudden lefts and rights at no pattern before ending in the cafeteria. It was okay, not full because it wasn't dinner yet. A guy stood in the back that I'd come to realize as Daniel.
"Daniel," Luke called out. ", did you perhaps end the Lyons?"
Daniel paled and shook his head. Luke cursed and ran a hand over his face. I punched in his shoulder getting his attention and gave him the look that said 'explain'.
"The Lyons are-were- I don't know anymore, the ones that hunted you. They followed you to Durban, started the war, wanting to kill their first target which is you." He jabbed a finger into my chest. I looked harder into his and Daniel's eyes.
"And you're saying, that you all just forgot about the Lyons, whatever they are was after me?" I stepped back and ran a hand through my own hair. Where was Jake when I need him?
"Look, I thought that Death took care of them." Luke defended himself. Daniel, like always, kept quiet.
"Where is he anyways?" I asked them. He shrugged but it seemed Daniel knew.
"It wouldn't perhaps be April fools, would it?" Daniel asked in his silky voice. I nodded. Luke swore again.
"Are you for real?"
"Okay, what could be worse than a forgotten army hunting your leader?" I asked the two.
"Well you should probably sit down for this," Daniel pulled me to one of the couches. "Once a year, the month of Jake's birthday, the gods get weird. It's almost like they want a new body and ever since Trigon took the Thales family, the gods wanted to host, fuse with them. The only problem was that until Hades, they never took an Olympian and ever since then they've been fighting for his body. The month the hosts body is born, in this case Jake's body, the connection gets strengthened tenfold. The god takes over he,she's body to protect it from the others."
"Wait," I made a 'wait' gesture just to make it clear."Are you telling me that my boyfriend, that I didn't even know was still hosting Hades, is gone full Hades and is from today on fighting an army of arguably the strongest gods?"
When Jake and me started dating, we never brought up that part of us. The part that we both were ancestors of the first people to host gods. Not only that but Jake's ancestor was responsible for killing everyone but my great grandfather who later on killed him. Now Jake was hosting Hades, and I had come to the assumption he had released Hades.
"Well, there's more than just that," Daniel burst my bubble. "When Hades took control before he was way more powerful, dangerous and more evil than when Jake was in control. Caitlyn," Daniel paused but quickly gathered himself. ", used to be able to control him even fight alongside him but this year is certainly going to be worse. And who knows what will happen this year. "
"Wait, so not only isn't he Jake anymore, his more evil? What is the worst his has done?"
"You remember Ocean View?" I paled at Luke's words. Of course I did. It was a shopping mall that hosted some of the finest shops here in South Africa until it was destroyed in some freak accident a year ago.
"So you're telling me I have an army of mysterious creatures, 12 gods that want his body and might use me to get to him, and an evil boyfriend that might destroy Aeolus City with a flick of his hand?" I asked them. They nodded.
