I guess The Remnants knew all about April because as soon as Jake entered the room everyone else exited. Then we made the mistake of trying to get information out of him.
What we did get out was that he didn't know anything about us or who we were. When he didn't listen, I lost my temper and shouted at him. He turned and looked at me. He stood from his seat and as he rose everything else did as well. Everything, tables, chairs, sofas, was floating around us, but it dropped immediately as Jake did as well.
"What do you want from me?" he asked lowly.
"I want to know what is going on. I want to know where you've been." I answered.
He smiled. "So your my sister then?"
I immediately shook my head in disgust. "Okay then, I must have killed your boyfriend. Look I'm sorry but he probably had it coming."
I slapped him. The sound echoed across the room as well as the gasp from my friends but I'm sorry. I had enough of this arrogant Jake. But it was a bad move.
Jake looked me in the eyes and just for a second they looked like they were burning. Then suddenly a giant purple hand came out of him and tried to grab me.
I stumbled back but when I looked there was nothing. Nothing but Jake pinning me against the wall with his body. How had that happened?
"Do that again, sweetheart and I'll make my brothers look like mortals." he whispered into my ear and is it wrong for me to say that it kind of turned me on?
He stepped away and looked outside at the normal bustle of Headquarters. He looked sad for a moment but then he excused himself and walked away.
"What was that? " Toni asked. "I didn't even see him move, but he had you pinned down so fast."
"Not to mention the sexual tension that you two have." Psyche commented as she ate her sandwich.
"I thought something made a grab for me. Didn't you see anything?" They all shook their heads.
"It's weird that he doesn't remember anything." Psyche said. "I wonder what Hades did that made himself so powerful. And if the cost was his memory."
She was right, but I had other things to worry about. I quickly told them about Nyx and her promise. Psyche practically slapped me with her eyes.
"Are you an idiot or just pretending to be one?" She ran a hand through her pretty hair in frustration.
"What do you mean?" I asked dumbly.
"The river Styx is the most serious oath in any mythology. It isn't just because if you break the promise Nyx will be mad. The river Styx is a binding oath meaning if you break it serious misfortune will come your way. It's worse than death."
I gulped. Really? I made an oath and if I didn't do it I might suffer a fate worse than death. What was I thinking?
"Is there anything else I need to know about this river?" I asked.
"Only that the goddess of hate is in control of the river." Psyche told me. Great!
"Okay then it's clear that we need to go to the Lyons and kill their leader." Toni said enthusiastically but I know Psyche saw more. She knew how difficult this was going to be. Physically and mentally.
"Well let's go then." I walked out the room.
°°°
We got in Daniel's new car. It was me, Toni and Psyche. Luke was still recovering from Artemis arrow, so we were left alone but this time we stocked up with weapons. We were about to leave when the car didn't move. Daniel resorted into flooring it but the car still wouldn't move. Then we looked in front to see Jake standing in front of the car, the car pressed against him.
"And where do you think you're going, sweetheart?" He asked seriously, no humour presence on his face.
"Move out the way, Jake. We're off to take care of business." I rolled my eyes. He looked like he wanted to say something but then he disappeared in black flames.
The car suddenly lurched forward. "What was all that about?" Toni asked. I thought she was talking about the car, but she was talking about Jake. Psyche shrugged, not having a clue.
We floored it and drove to the ruins of Ocean View.
°°°
I got out the car and stood for a whole two minutes. It was strange.
"You know it's weird that I have to go looking for danger?" I said as I leaned on the car. Toni gave a nervous laugh.
"Yeah normally we don't even get to exit the car before somethin-" she was cut off by a howl.
We looked, and the Lyons had shown up. The leader was back. He smiled at me.
"So your back. Prepared I see?"
"It's just you and me, let's end this." I ordered, walking straight to him. I didn't know what exactly to expect but I knew how to fight. And I had a feeling he'd tell his men to back down.
I ran at him and flicked my wrist. My whip showed up in my fist and instantly wrapped around it. Shards of diamonds glinted sharply but they didn't pierce my skin. They will however pierce his.
I threw a quick jab at his face, but he was fast. He stepped back and made me come closer. He was taunting me, but I wouldn't let him get me. Instead of advancing, I unwrapped the whip and flashed it towards his face. The diamonds left three deep scratches across his face. He snarled and I backed away as he transformed.
His werewolf was bigger than the others and more disformed. His head was more snout than anything. His body was bony, and I couldn't see how it carried his massive front legs and tiny hind legs. Nevertheless, it was terrible sight and it lunged at me.
I swung the whip with a crackling boom! And sent it flying. It's disformed body was covered in cuts and purple flames. It tried to rise but couldn't and let loose a sickening howl.
Now the real challenge began. I knew I promised Nyx, but I've never skinned a live animal. I needed to kill it, skin it and sacrifice it but that was easier said than done. And I was sure the other Lyons weren't going to stand back while I skin their master.
Meanwhile, their leader was rising, battered and dying. One more hit and he'd be gone. I rushed him as he rushed me. I flicked the whip around my fist and the last second I went into a slide. As I neared the leader, I kicked his two front legs and immediately punched him in the face. The punch sent me propelling back the way I came and the werewolf propelled back it's way. It landed against the sidewalk with a loud crack and a thud. It didn't get up.
My team yelled and whooped at my victory before the rest of the Lyons let out an angry howl and they rushed us. They moved so fast that I didn't have a moment to react. That was before a powerful wind surged around The Remnants.
