Masquerade

We get an invitation everyday
To attend a grand Masquerade,
Majestic masks are worn by all,
And we dance like puppets till the night falls.

Masks of Beauty, Masks of Fame,
Masks of Success, Masks do reign!
Veiling our real selves, we celebrate the lies,
Impaling our real needs, we go for the unsought prize.

Drinks are clinked, people cheer, friends are made,
Eyes are met, smiles exchanged, fingers are entwined like peaceful granades,
But then we empty our cups, stop the dance, wave hands and kiss our goodbyes,
As the cold, but revealing night finally arrives.

I head my home, they head theirs,
We rip off our worn out masks and stand bare,
Covered only with truth, how bitter nonetheless,
We try to untangle the strands of the neat mess.

The truth so ugly, truth of shame,
Truth of regrets, truth of pain,
Flaming our real selves, we mortify the truth,
Blaming our real needs, we do the deeds of a brute.

Yet, as the oceans of tears evaporate
Under the warmth of the first sunrays,
We mend our masks by those tangled threads,
And with beautiful lies, we dress our bare, ugly skins,
And, though with raging hate, we open the gates, and, once again, attend the Masquerade.
