I broke away from the kiss and looked around confused. However, I then noticed that one of the thirty-year-old guys was pointing a camera in our direction. I heard him say: “Hey Nathan, kiss your girl again will ya? We want another picture.”
I cringed and thought to myself: “Oh my god. He must be a paparazzi. The two men knew who Nathan was the whole time and must have been waiting hoping we would have some kind of couple-like moment.” I looked over at Nathan who was suddenly up and heading over to the men. I really hoped he didn’t punch them like he had with that man in the club, especially because we still had a good ten minutes until we could exit off the ride. Surprisingly, Nathan started speaking to the paparazzi that took the picture in a calm tone. “Excuse me, but since you just took a picture of my girlfriend and I here without asking, I think it’s only fair that I see the picture.”
“Can’t do that Nathan, you’ll just delete it.”
“No, I’m not gonna delete it mate. Just let me see the picture.”
The man hesitated but then eventually handed his camera over to Nathan. Nathan looked at the camera for a minute and then handed it back to him. “I’m not going to argue with you mate, do whatever you want with the picture.” I was shocked to see that Nathan was letting him off the hook so easily, but I realised he must have a reason for doing so.
For the remaining ten minutes of the ride everyone in the capsule was silent. The paparazzi had put his camera away, I think he was weary that Nathan might change his mind and become confrontational should he try to take another picture. Not like there would have been much to photograph anyways. I had gotten up and was standing almost right up against the glass, watching as we moved closer and closer to the ground. Nathan was sitting down again and was either texting someone or tweeting. I wondered if he was texting Jayne about what had happened. As it came time to get off the ride, Nathan grabbed my hand and we quickly exited the capsule. “C’mon, we need to get out of here as soon as possible in case… oh.” Nathan looked straight ahead and I realised why he had stopped talking in the middle of his sentence. There was a small group of girls (less than six) standing waiting a few metres away from the boarding platform. Their faces lit up when they saw Nathan.
“NATHAN!!! WE LOVE YOU!!!”
Nathan squeezed my hand tightly. “I’m just going to say a quick hello.”
For a minute I was confused. I thought to myself “Does he want me to stand here while he says hello to them?” But then he held onto my hand and started leading me over to them. I suddenly felt very nervous, how were these girls going to react to him holding my hand? Nathan however, looked as cool as a cucumber. He didn’t seem worried about what the girls would think at all.
“Hi girls. You alright?” He let go of my hand so that he could hug them. They hadn’t seemed to notice that he had been holding my hand. They must have just been so excited to see Nathan that they weren’t thinking about anything else. None of the girls said anything to me or even really acknowledged that I was there, which was fine by me.
After taking a few pictures with the girls, he said goodbye and we made our way into a cab. Once settled into the cab I said: “Nathan, can you please explain to me what happened with that man? I’m so confused. Why did you react so calmly?”
“What? Did you really expect me to start a fight with him? In that little of a confined space?”
“No… I just thought that you would be angry at him for taking that picture.”
I heard Nathan sigh loudly. “Look Sophie, I don’t want to talk about this here. Let’s wait until we get back to your place okay?”
“Okay, fine…” I felt the nerves start to build up in my stomach. I hoped Nathan wasn’t angry with me. I don’t think I would be able to handle that.
