Chapter 6 - Picnic

We sat under the tree in the park, all sorts of snacks spread out among us. I had to hold my half-empty bag of chips so that the wind wouldn't blow it away. I couldn't help but notice Gene glancing over at me with his eyes squinted like he was observing me. Sasha chuckled lightly beside me at the joke Zenix must have shared but I was too busy wondering what Gene was doing.

"Have you ever had a picnic before (Y/n)?" Gene asked, catching me off-guard, my grip loosening on the bag but Gene grabbed it before it flew off in the wind.

I gave him a pointed look, trying not to seem embarrassed as I took my chip bag from him. "Of course I have. Why do you ask?"

Gene shrugged, taking a drink of the water he had beside him. Sasha raised her eyebrow and looked at me curiously. Zenix had a smug expression on his face, looking out at the trees in the distance. I glanced around and couldn't help but to think about back home.

"School should be out by now," Sasha said, glancing at the time on her phone.

"I should be going then," I sighed, getting up from the ground.

"Aw, will (Y/n) get in trouble if they're late?" Gene teased, smirking at me.

I furrowed my eyebrows at him, slightly surprised that he was using my real name and not his nickname. "I do have family at home, you know?"

"The Shadow Knight's meeting isn't ov-"

"Okay then, I'll walk you home," Gene said out of the blue.

"Uh, w-what?" I stuttered, not believing what I heard. Is Gene being nice?

"You heard me," He replied, sending me a glare.

I tried to keep my face from reddening but there was no use. Why would he even want to walk me home? The sun is out so it's obviously not for security purposes.

Sasha waved, chuckling at us. "Don't scare them, Gene!" She yelled as we walked away.

We walked in an awkward silence, my hands fumbling with one another in front of me. His hands were left carelessly in his pockets as he looked around at the houses we were passing.

"Why are you walking me home?" I asked, a frown on my face.

He gave me an innocent look, "What do you mean?"

"I know you, you wouldn't do this to just be nice."

"You've known me for like three days," He said, rolling his eyes.

"Just tell me why you're walking me home."

He gave me another smug look before answering, "Well, if I know your address then I'll know where to come get you when there are Shadow Knight meetings."

I stopped walking, shaking my head, "Why are you even set on me joining the Shadow Knights?"

"It's payment for the Hot Topic incident you had. You know, joining the Shadow Knights isn't that bad."

I crossed my arms in front of me, "Yeah, well I already declined the offer, thank you."

"Really? It seemed like you were enjoying yourself at lunch."

I felt some heat radiating from my cheeks but I dismissed it soon after. "It's been a while since I've hung out after school with people."

"Well, it was technically during school."

"Shut up, Romeo," I said before starting to walk again.

Gene looked at me curiously as we walked, making me roll my eyes.

"We're already here," I said, stopping in front of the driveway of my house. I watched as his eyes looked over my house before making eye contact with mine again.

"Is your bedroom in the front of the house or back?"

I glared at him and lightly shoved him. "Gene you are not sneaking into my room at night."

"So no airhorn pranks?" He chuckled.

"Absolutely no air horn pranks," I pointed my finger at him to hopefully get my point across. He raised his eyebrows at my finger then looked at me in amusement. "I'm going now, so you should go and see your little Shadow Gang or whatever it's called."

"It's not a gang!" He shouted at me, causing me to turn around and stick out my tongue at him before shutting the front door.

I sighed when I heard the door close and laid my forehead head on it, not believing that it's been such a hectic day and it's only around 4 pm.

"(Y/n), who was that?" My mom said from beside me.

I jumped and looked to the side, seeing her looking out the window between the blinds to see the Shadow Knight leader outside. "Just someone I met from school," I responded, knowing how angry she'd be if she knew he was actually really rebellious and made me skip school. Let's just not mention that.

She glanced up at me with an unamused look. Rolling her eyes, she said, "You better not be hanging out with the wrong people (Y/n), you know where that got us last time."

I clenched my teeth, and turned around, not wanting to be reminded of back home. "I know mom and I'm not. I will never get involved in a group like that."

My mom smiled at me before turning back around. "Do you have any suggestions on what I should make for dinner?"
