Chapter 12 - Idiot

I staggered around my room, biting my bottom lip as I rung my hands. To say I was nervous was an understatement; I was terrified. Gene was going to ask me about my mood today and I wouldn't know how to respond. I can't just spill my whole life onto someone's shoulders and expect them to not pity me. My mom and I went through a lot in the past two years and I was not a stranger to that. However, I wouldn't expect an outsider to know how I feel, to know how to help me. Heck, I didn't even know how to help myself. I still don't know.

It's a matter of time before I break, spilling all of my feelings that I tried to shove down all at once. But, today will not be that day. I am adamant that it will not be that day. Nothing will change my mind.

Gene didn't deserve it. He didn't deserve my emotional baggage.

"If you keep doing that then you might pull your fingers out of their sockets, Little Dove."

I whirled around, swaying a bit because of how dizzy it made me. Did Gene really sneak up on me like that? The teenager was looking at my flushed face, a small smirk replacing his stoic expression. Immediately, I stopped ringing my hands out of embarrassment, instead clenching my fists nervously.

"G-Gene? How did you get in?"

"Your window," Gene responded, motioning toward the window that was open next to him, "You should really lock it, by the way, anyone could come in if you leave them unlocked."

I frowned, "Yeah, I really should have locked it today. Maybe then I wouldn't have an idiot in my room."

He furrowed his eyebrows and shook his head, sliding the window shut. "Just because I don't pay attention doesn't mean I'm an idiot, (Y/n). I could make better grades than you."

"You're not even there to take the tests," I laugh, slowly calming down.

Gene rolled his eyes and took a seat on my bed, looking around my bedroom curiously. I shifted from foot to foot, my heart lightly pounding against my chest. Something about him peering around my room made me anxious. Maybe it was the thought of him trying to figure me out, trying to determine what kind of person I am.

Once his eyes scanned my room, he looked back up at me, laying back on the bed. "I think your bedroom suits you."

I raised my eyebrows, stopping my frantic movements. "What?"

He smiled, spreading his arms out. "I said, 'I think your bedroom suits you.'"

"Thanks?" I said unsurely, taking small shaky steps toward my bed. I didn't really have anything planned to do while he was here; I expected Gene to already have everything planned. Unfortunately, right now it seemed like I was wrong. he was just laying out on my bed, observing my room as if it was an art project.

I glanced over at the clock, reading the time. It was 10:00 already. "Why did you come over so late?"

"It's dark outside," Gene replied, "If I decided to sneak through your bedroom while it was light outside then it would look suspicious to your neighbors." I nodded my head, understanding his point. "I don't think your mom likes me so if she heard about that from one of her neighbors, she would kill me, or you."

"She would kill both of us," I laughed, taking a seat on the end of my bed.

I stopped abruptly when I heard footsteps creak up the stairs. I shoved Gene off the side of my bed, afraid that my mom would open my door once she made it up the stairs. The loud thump that Gene made when he hit the ground wasn't very helpful.

"(Y/n)?" My mom called from outside the door.

"Y-Yes, mom?"

"Are you okay? That was a very loud fall."

"A-Ah yes. I just tripped. You know me, clumsy," I said, my hands starting to feel clammy.

"Okay, well I'm going to bed."

I fell back on the bed when I heard her bedroom door shut. Sighing, I glanced back where I pushed Gene off the bed. "Gene?" I questioned, tilting my head, "Where did you go?"

I crawled to the end of the bed, peering over the corner. Weird enough, Gene wasn't there; it was like he teleported to a different place. My heart started to pound again when I stood up off of the bed, walking around it in confusion. Gene couldn't have gone far.

Abruptly, a hand shot out from under the bed, wrapping around my ankle. I shrieked, stumbling back into my dresser. When I heard a door open and footsteps approaching my room again, I threw my head back, forcing my eyes shut as I let out a quiet groan. Gene had to scare me, didn't he?

"(Y/n), are you sure you're alright?"

"Yeah mom, I just got scared of my reflection," I rolled my eyes, covering my face with my hands.

I listened as my mom hesitantly walked away and went back to her room, shutting the door a bit louder this time. Once I knew she was gone, I instantly slid to the side of my bed, looking under it. "Gene," I whispered, squinting my eyes at him, "You can't do that." I watched him as he softly chuckled, trying to be quiet as he crawled out from under my bed.

"Who says I can't?" He asked, smiling at me.

"Me, idiot," I sighed, rubbing my forehead to calm myself down.

"What, you can't handle a joke, Little Dove?"

I scoffed, glaring at him. "You just grabbed my foot from under the bed. That's everyone's worst nightmare."

He shook his head before he stood up from the ground, making his way next to me. I observed Gene as he scanned over my dresser, stopping at my old picture frame. Slowly, he lifted it up, tilting his head as he moved it closer to his face, his eyes squinting. "Who's this?"

I raised my eyebrows, moving to stand next to him. I felt my heart throb as I looked at the picture frame.

"That's my brother."

I don't know if you can tell but I really enjoyed writing this chapter. I've been wanting to write so bad so here it is. I wrote this while listening to Ed Sheeran. I guess I have to listen to Ed Sheeran to get in the mood to write now, haha.

Did any of you like this chapter as much as I did?

I love all of you very much and I hope you have a wonderful day/night. <3
