Chapter 20 - Affection

I felt like Gene's affection was part of the reason why I was so emotionally stable throughout the school week. Normally, I would be a complete mess, lashing out at teachers, failing tests, and eating lunch alone in the bathroom. This year, however, Gene was with me everywhere I went. He would rush to make it to my classroom in time to walk me to my next period, even if he was going to be late for his class as a consequence. He would take time to hug me before and after each lesson, whispering how he was so proud of me, even if I didn't even tell him what it was about. Overall, he was extremely supportive and a bit clingy, but I wasn't complaining.

I had a bit of trouble at night in particular. Especially since Gene wasn't there to support me and, well, my mom had taken extra shifts, claiming that it would take her mind off things. The second night that I couldn't help but text Gene, scared of how my thoughts wandered into such dark places. I needed to take my mind off things and he was the perfect person considering that every time I'm with him, time seems to be nonexistent. Gene texted me right back and talked me through things enough to where I could get some sleep before school the next day.

It was Thursday, and the inevitable night was creeping up so fast that I could barely breathe. Gene was helping me a lot with just being himself, but nothing can take the pain away completely. I got to school early that morning, as I did every other day, and found myself engulfed in arms as soon as I walked through the large double doors of the school.

As soon as Gene pulled away, he asked how I was doing and grabbed my hand, leading me to where he and his friends sat. I told him I was doing fine in response, in which he gave me a questionable look, but didn't say anything about it.

Sasha and Zenix, who I actually became closer with despite their reputations, stared at the two of us walking towards them. When I made eye contact with Sasha, she rose her eyebrows at me, glancing at our conjoined hands before winking at me. I rolled my eyes at her and moved closer to Gene's side, which made her grin even wider at the two of us. They both liked to tease us on how close our relationship had gotten and how Gene has no problem showing it off to other people. Sasha even asked me when we were alone if Gene and I were dating or not, to which I responded that we aren't because I genuinely didn't know.

Sure, we confessed to each other but we never really defined our relationship. For some reason, thinking about it made me feel worse. We weren't technically dating, but he paid attention to me like we were. It made me confused and I couldn't help but question the state of our relationship.

What are we? Are we just really good friends who like each other? Honestly, I didn't have the guts to bring it up. It made my mind swarm and that was the last thing I needed at the moment.

So, we went on with the week, holding hands and doing whatever we wanted. Sasha and Zenix didn't stop the teasing though, making faces at us when we turned around even though we could see them through the reflection of the windows. Gene didn't seem to care though, he found it amusing.

Whenever they would make kissy faces at us, Gene would ask them to get their own room and kiss elsewhere, which never failed to shut them right up. Sasha and Zenix would make disgusted faces, pretending like they were going to throw up.

They didn't do that this time. The two scoundrels wouldn't stop nudging each other with their elbows as they motioned to our hands. Gene, noticing what they were looking at, moved our hands behind him, still keeping them together as he glared at the two.

"Do you mind letting go of (Y/n) for once? Some people want to be able to talk to them privately," Sasha spoke up, offering a sarcastic smile to Gene.

Huffing, Gene let go of my hand, mumbling something about how he had to go to the office anyway, before walking away. Sasha was quick to grab my hand as soon as Gene disappeared from view.
