It was a warm afternoon and the sea was calm. Patrick had spent the whole morning with cleaning the deck. Now he laid in his bed and read his favourite book which he already knew by heart. But it just never got boring. He was so concentrated on the storyline that he didn't notice how something small and white slowly flew inside the cabin. Not until it suddenly landed on a page of his book. Patrick was kind of confused since birds usually never came that near to his  boat. He got out of his bed and looked out the cabin to check what was happening on deck. He gasped when he saw a seagull furiously flapping its wings that were caught in a rope. It only made it worse. Patrick felt bad for the small creature and when he realised that it wouldn't get out on its own,he decided to help. He slowly walked over to the reeling trying not to scare the seagull . The animal backed up when Patrick sat down beside it.
"Shhh. It's okay little friend. I'm not going to hurt you." he reached out his hand to carefully stroke the small animal's back. The seagull slowly calmed down at the man's friendly voice. It felt save.
Patrick carefully picked it up and brought it to his cabin to take a look at its broken wing.

"So there we go. Don't worry my friend you're going to be fine."
The seagull curiously looked at the bandage Patrick had put on its wing.
"I guess you have to stay for some time until your wing is fine again . I'm going to take good care of you."

The seagull looked around the cabin with its small black eyes and jumped on Patrick's piano.
Patrick smiled
"Do you want me to play something?"
The seagull patiently looked at him. He felt like that animal actually wanted him to play something on the piano.

He hesitantly sat down on his chair and looked the keys.
"You know, there's this one song i always played. But it doesn't belong to me. A friend wrote it."
Patrick felt ridiculous. As if the seagull would actually listen to him.
But it just felt like that. It watched Patrick with its black button eyes like it would listen to him talking.
So Patrick started playing.

"I got troubled thoughts
And the self-esteem to match
What a catch, what a catch..."

"You're singing is amazing, Patrick."
Pete sat on the swing in the school yard , his head resting in his hands .
Patrick didn't answer and just watched  a tiny ladybug crawling up  his arm. Tears were filling up his eyes. Pete noticed it.
"What's wrong?"
"Me." Patrick said. "I am wrong. I can't sing. I'm just awful at everything and i ruined your song."
"Ruined??" Pete sat straight up. He seemed kinda angry.
"You didn't ruin anything,Patrick. And that's the thing that's so fascinating about you. You just can't ruin things. You can only make them better. Whatever you say or whatever you do. You just have to blink and everything is wonderful."
Patrick didn't want to believe him but Pete seemed really serious about it.
"You're exaggerating."
"No i'm not."
"Yes you are. You always exaggerate about the smallest things."
Pete changed the topic:
" My mum wants to invite you to dinner on Friday. We want to know if you're free that day."
Patrick couldn't believe it. Someone actually wanted to have him around for dinner!
" Yeah i'm free but... Are you sure you want me to be around?"
Pete laughed out loud.
"Dude, my mum loves you! And i would be really happy if you'd come."
"But what if i forget about it? Stuff like that always happens to me."

"Keep a calendar. This way you will always know."

"You really like writing songs don't you?" Patrick asked and smiled.

"Yeah." Pete started swinging on his swing.

"SUGAR WE'RE GOING DOWN SWINGING!" he yelled into the sky .

Patrick woke up as the sun shined trough the small window. He sat up in his bed. The seagull was still sleeping in Patrick's hat on the night stand.
Patrick realised that the didn't wake up in the middle of the night this time. When was the last time he had slept that well? He didn't remember. He was often woken up by nightmares the last few weeks and he always would have to stay up until he was able to sleep again.
But he felt pretty well today.
The seagull soon woke up as well.
Patrick got out of bed and smiled at his new friend.

"Let's make some breakfast!"
