I am a runaway. A coward, if that's what you want to call me. I am Kira, currently on my way to New York, where I believe a better life for me awaits. I have no clue how I am going to manage my life there, I have no clue what am I going to do, but one thing is for sure - I AM NEVER GOING BACK.
I boarded the flight to New York, with a plane ticket and my scholarship letter to the Empire State University. Both of them are my ticket to freedom, to my new life.
~********************************************~
I walk out from the airport and step into New York for the first time. I am greeted by a pleasant cool breeze as I put my luggage down, waving for the taxi. After several attempts of failure, I finally lost my patience, and I did what I do best. I joined my thumb and my index finger making an 'o' shape, I placed them under my tongue and blew. A strong whistle filled the air, making everyone's head turn towards me. A yellow taxi came to a halt right in front of me, and I smiled at my victory. The taxi driver helped me with my luggage and I got inside.
"To Forest Hills please" I told him. His foot contacted with the accelerator and we sped away. I glanced outside my window at the changing scenery, but what remained constant was the occasional view of the sun in between the buildings. I felt my lips tug into a smile as I adored this beautiful city.
I.WAS.FREE. These three words made me feel so happy that my heart fluttered with joy.
The taxi took one last turn and we entered a beautiful street with houses lined on either side. I immediately spot Nancy in bright pink dress standing on the lawn, waiting for me. She hasn't changed a bit since I last met her at my cousin's wedding two years ago. Her blonde hair flew in the wind, enhancing her beauty somehow. A bright and warm smile spread across her lips as she saw me.
I got out of the taxi only to be engulfed in her warm and gigantic hug.
I hugged her back without a moment of hesitation, although I haven't seen her in two years.
"Can't breathe." I pretend to choke, joking around.
"Oh shut up!" she laughs, releasing me. Just then my most favourite person comes out, running towards me.
"Kira!" he screams as he jumps into my open arms, a goofy smile plastered on his face.
A oomph escapes my mouth as I lift him up.
"You've grown heavy, champ." I said, shifting him on my arm so his bones wouldn't poke me. "How old are you now? Three?"
"I am five." he scoffs.
"oh wow."
"Time flies so soon, huh?" Nancy says, ruffling sid's hair. "C'mon lets go in."
I drop Sid down and start dragging my luggage behind me.
The minute I step inside the house I feel it's amazing warm and cozy atmosphere. The air smells of butter cookies, yum... my favourite.
"Sid go show Kira her room, till then I'll set dinner."
Sid grabs my free hand and starts pulling me upstairs, and I struggle to pull my luggage behind me.
Sid however being five, ended up showing me his room, his car and monster collection and his scars before finally taking me to my bedroom. I walk into my room and the first thing I notice is the effort Nancy has put in it to make it comfortable for me to live in. It was a pretty bedroom, it had one balcony on my left facing the front, and two door my right. I knew one of them was the bathroom and the other closet. I grabbed the essentials from my bag and went for a quick shower. Nancy had placed clean and fresh towels in the bathroom already. After my shower I was determined to finish my packing that night itself, I hate keeping things pending, however I always end up doing that only. I was halfway through my un-packing when I heard light knocks on my door.
"I am decent! Come in" I said. Nancy walked in, while Sid's small head just peaked from the door.
"Need help?" she asked but I kindly refused.
"I am almost done." I fish out two gifts that my mother had packed for them.
"Mom sent this for you." I said, handing her the small box wrapped in red paper. "And you, come here." I said to the little boy standing in the doorway, immediately he runs up to me, his brown eyes shinning with excitement.
I laugh internally.
I hid his gift behind me, and pretended to search for it.
His face fell, "You don't have a gift for me?" he pout.
"Maybe I could do some magic. Close your eyes, c'mon."
he squeezes his eyes shut.
"No cheating." I warn him. I remove the beautifully covered box from behind me, "Open your hands."
I place the box in his small open palms. His eyes snap open, and he grins at me. He sits crossed legged on the floor and starts tearing through the cover.
"A remote control car!" he exclaims. "I love you Kira!" he kisses my cheek.
I look up at Nancy who was sitting on the bed, she was gleaming at her son.
"Can I go play?" his puppy eyes pleads his mother.
"Later, first let's go have dinner."
I smile, and follow those two downstairs. The dinner was amazing, what was more amazing was the speed in which Sid finished the entire food in his plate. He ran upstairs to play with his new toy, while Nancy and I sat on the couch in the living room, catching up.
"Thank-you."
I gave her a questioning look.
"I haven't seen him this happy since ... " she pauses, and realization seeps into me.
Jack. Nancy's only love. He passed away 8 months ago, leaving everything to Nancy. She has been very strong, handling it quite well, mostly for the sake of her son.
"He used to get cars for him, every weekend."
I was pretty sure she was having a flashback.
"I always warned him he was spoiling our son. Have you seen his car collection?" I nod with a smile as I remember Sid showing me his three shelves filled with them.
She takes an audible deep breath, and I know she is trying not to cry.
"How about hot chocolate?" I ask her, making my way to the kitchen. That night we spent our time talking about Jack, refreshing our memories of him. She cried and laughed, emotions flew right out of her. She fell off asleep on the couch, her head resting on my thigh. I smile down at her, and rub her forehead. I gently hold her head, and slip off, replacing myself with a pillow.
I grab a blanket and tuck her in, making sure she is comfortable. A strange peace is spread across her face as she sleeps. I tiptoe my way upstairs, only to see Sid, sleeping across the floor outside my room, with his arms wrapped around the car. I smile sadly, this family has lost so much so fast. I pick Sid up in my arms, after a lot of struggle and put him in my bed. Nancy had told me he's afraid to sleep alone.
I jump in the bed next to his small figure, and wrap the blanket over him, "Guess you'll be sleeping with me today." I whisper, and kiss his small forehead. His eyes open, "Will you sing to me?" he asks hopefully.
"Sure ... um ..." I think for sometime searching my brain for a song.
"Somewhere ... over the rainbow,
Way up high... there's a land that I have heard of once in a lullaby.
Someday I'll wish upon a star, and wake up where the clouds are far behind...me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops away above the chimney tops... that's where you'll find...me."
I end the song in a whisper as I see him asleep peacefully in my arms, a small smile on his lips.
"Goodnight champ. Have the sweetest of the sweetest dreams."
