Chapter 8: A Lot More Complicated

"OLYMPIA! Do you know anything on how the villain, Otis could have escaped," shouted Ms. O angrily in her office later.

She had just received the news about the mysterious break out.

"No, but he is pretty clever. He probably figured it out on his own," Olympia shrugged off in her practiced lie, from on the ride back to headquarters.

"Still. I need answers! We can't risk even more villains getting out, and now it's your mission to track him down again," Ms. O informed her.

"What," shot out Olympia in complete disbelief.

"He's already struck again, and you've been the only one able to catch him so far. Don't let me down," Ms. O said, her face full of concern for once.

"I'll try not to, Ms. O," Olympia softly answered with a sigh.

She then turned to leave, Ms. O letting out a breath she had been holding. She knew that there was something going on between Olympia and Otis, and it pained her to see her best agent interfering with a villain. She had no clue that Olympia had helped him to escape, but she had seen the way they looked at each other in the Interrogation Room. If she didn't know any better, she would have guessed that she paired them together all along. She always knew that Ori would click better with someone else, there just had never been anyone close enough to do that well with Olympia. Oona was about the only option, but she was a scientist, so that idea was impossible. There was a tugging on Ms. O's insides as well, that something in the universe was wrong, but she had never felt that way besides... She wouldn't bring that old memory up again.

"Olympia," Otis asked, as he revealed himself from behind a couple of trees.

"Otis," she exclaimed, hoping she wouldn't find him, so that she wouldn't have to arrest him.

"What are you doing here," he wondered.

"Hunting you down," she admitted.

"But you wouldn't. We're partners in crime," he reminded her.

"I'm sorry. I can't risk losing my job. Odd Squad's the best thing that's ever happened to me," Olympia confessed.

"Then consider us enemies," Otis reacted, his expression darkened.

Her eyes widened as she lifted her head, dodging the flashes of blue light he shot at her.

"I'm not going to be your enemy, but I can't be your friend either," she confided.

"Friend," he repeated confusedly, putting away his device.

"That's what we are, right? Or would be if you weren't on the other side," Olympia noted.

Otis looked at her sadly before responding, "Hey, it's not so bad being locked up at Odd Squad. I do get to see you every day."

He cautiously took her hand, as a tiny smile flashed across his face.

"But that's the thing, I can't be happy now, knowing that you're not happy, and I can't just let you go either, if I'm working for Odd Squad," she explained.

"Then run away with me," he stated as though it was that simple.

"Otis... I can't be what you are. I can't cause oddness," she emphasized.

"And I can't let my friend get in trouble, because of me. Go ahead, partner. Take me in," he urged, her smiling sadly as he held both of his wrists out, with his head lowered.

"I don't need to handcuff you. Come on," she instructed, gently grabbing his wrist before leading him back to headquarters.

"Good job, agent. He is now once again locked away in the kids' jail," Ms. O congratulated Olympia, although it felt more like bullets through her heart.

Ms. O sighed silently as she watched her depressed agent leave, the haunting memory attacking her with no warning. She had journeyed down to the city of Atlantis to help with a Dave infestation. That's how Oona got the Daves in headquarters to watch out for in the first place.

"Thank you, Odd Squad. I am pleased to inform you, that I have decided to give you one wish," the merpeople's king told her.

"Thank you, your highness," Ms. O bowed.

"Well, what shall it be," he questioned with a special twinkle in his eye.

Ms. O inhaled shakily as her purple mermaid tail lightly swished below her. She was racking her brain for an answer, when she remembered how Oscar never would attend the Scientist Convention, that he always dreamed of.

She then looked directly up at the king, requesting confidently, "I wish that Oscar will finally go to a Scientist's Convention."

"As you wish," replied the king, swirling his staff around as gold sparkles filled the waters around them.

Soon the area was back to normal, and Ms. O secretly wondered if the wish had actually worked or not. When she got back though, her proof was right there.

Oscar had awkwardly walked up to her, admitting, "Ms. O, I've decided that no matter what, I'm going to the Scientist's Convention this year. I don't know what's gotten into me."

"I do," Ms. O stated quietly.

"What," he asked, confused by what he thought he had heard.

"Nothing," she claimed.

Months later, she would never let anyone know that taking Oscar to that convention felt wrong. Even with the mind control incident, that wasn't it. Then it hit her when she learned that he would be head of the scientist department now. She assured him he should take the job, but she couldn't help but wonder if he would have stayed at Odd Squad, if it wasn't for her. Even though they hung out soon after, she left that day, too afraid to confess her special feelings for him. Long distance relationships were hard work, and with how busy they both were, practically impossible. She couldn't help but wonder if in some strange way, the universe had been altered again, but this time it was a lot more complicated to solve.
