Want You Back

I walked into the diner, looking around. When I spotted her, I walked over to her and slipped into the booth.

"What's up? What's so urgent?", I asked. She sighed. "You're gonna hate me", she said. I frowned. "What is it?"

"Can I get you anything?", a waitress asked, interrupting me. "No, thanks." She smiled and left.

"So? Are you gonna tell me?", I asked again. "I just.. I just wanted to see you", she said. "Maria.. we agreed on not seeing each other for a while." She looked down to the milkshake she was holding. "I know but.. I can't hold on to my end of the deal. Why can't we just see each other?", she asked. "You know why." She shook her head. "I never got a valid reason. I just went along with it because you wanted it."

I sighed.

"I have to get over you, and I can't do that if we keep seeing each other. I need some time", I said. "Why do you want to get over me so bad?", she asked. She reached for my hand. "We had fun together, didn't we?" I looked our hands for a second, but pulled away.

"You cheated on me, remember?", I said.

"I know. And I still regret that to this day. But you gotta know.. I'm always gonna want you back. No matter how long we won't see each other, no matter how much you hate me, no matter how our lives will turn out to be, I'm always gonna want you back."

"That's all up to you.. But I can't be with someone that drops me for every single girl that comes by. I'm never gonna be the one you want to be with. Maybe for now, but not for something long term. A slightly prettier girl comes by, and I don't exist anymore. I tried to live with it, but I realized I don't deserve that. I deserve something much better, and that isn't you", I said.

"Steph..", she tried.

I got up and looked at her.

"You're not the relationship type of girl, and that's fine. But at least give me some more time to accept that, and move on."

She sighed and reached for my hand.

I shook my head before walking away.

"I'll see you around, Maria", I said before heading out the door.

I walked around, clearing my head. Well, I tried. She kept popping up in my head and there was nothing I could do.

After a while, I got a text. I pulled out my phone and checked my messages. I got 3 from Maria.

"I'm sorry I tricked you like that.. but what else can I do to earn your trust back? I just miss you.. and I AM the relationship type of girl, for you. Meet me back at the diner?"

"Can we just talk about us? We can give it some time. I don't mind waiting for you, even if it's years. I'm heading home in a bit, I hope you'll still meet me at the diner."

"I'm heading home now. I'm sad you didn't show up, but I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up. I'll see you around x."

I sighed. I do wanted to be with her, and I do wanted to forgive her. I just couldn't see past the things she'd done. It was 1,5 years ago, but it's still on my mind every day. We broke up 3 months ago, when I finally realized I deserved more. But I hadn't been thinking about something more.. I had been thinking about her, and nobody else.

I took a short cut through the park, when it started raining. It got heavier and heavier. I ran over the bridge and stood under a big tree, waiting for the rain to stop.

I waited for half an hour, but the rain only got worse.

I looked around, and spotted a gazebo. I smiled to myself.

"Come on!", Maria yelled and she ran in front of me. It started pouring when we had our picnic.

I laughed as I watched her almost trip over a branch.

"Watch where your going!", I yelled. "Hard to do when I can only watch you", she said. She stopped and waited for me to catch up.
"What are you doing? It's just a few meters away", I said.

She cupped my face and just looked at me before our lips touched. Suddenly, everything around is started fading away. All I could hear was my heart beat. All I could feel was her touch.

She pulled away and looked at me before she took my hand and ran for the gazebo.

"Come on!", she yelled. She looked back and smiled.

We finally reached the gazebo. As soon as we were under it, she pulled me back in and kissed me.

"I think I love you", she said. "Maria.." She shook her head. "You don't have to say anything", she said before pressing her lips against mine.

I got pulled out of my thoughts by thunder striking not far from here. I looked up and back at the gazebo, when I realized what I had to do.

I started running, as fast as I could. I ran through puddles of water and mud, before I finally reached her house.

I looked through the window, hoping she was still awake. My wet hair was dripping and blocking my sight. Suddenly I saw a light turn on. "Shit", I said to myself. I hid around the corner, hoping her parents didn't see me.

The door opened and a tall, dark haired guy stepped out.

"Sorry for calling you so late", I heard. "Maria?", I whispered to myself. She stepped outside and leaned in for a kiss.

I heard my heart shatter into millions of pieces.

I just stood there, not being able to do or say anything. I just looked at them, letting the rain hit me everywhere.

They pulled away and he got in his car, when Maria looked my way.

"Steph.."
