Chapter One: New Beginnings

Ava's POV

"Mom, I don't want to go!"

"I know it's going to be hard, but you have to understand that it's better for us." my mother said exasperated.

I stayed quiet as I made my way upstairs to pack my clothes. I would be spending my senior year in a whole different place with completely different friends. My life in Minnesota was nothing but good to me, and believe me it sucks leaving. I obviously knew it'd be the best for my mom, so I decided that staying quiet was the best option. 

You see, my Dad left my mother and I around two years ago. He cheated on my innocent mother with a bimbo that was half his age. Then he decided that he didn't want to have a kid anymore, so he went off and never came back. I probably sound insensitive saying this, but I learned that I shouldn't cry over him. My mom on the other hand, she cries almost every night and thinks I can't hear her. I need to stay strong for her. 

My thoughts were immediately interrupted once my bedroom door knocked.

"Come in!" I yelled.

"I can't believe you're moving all the way to California!" Whined my best friend Jasper.

"Hey, don't think of it as me leaving. Think of it as me going on vacation."I reassured him.

"Vacation for a whole year? Doesn't help one bit Aves, ugh come here." He waved his hands for me to embrace him.

As we were hugging in silence, it all came back to me. I'd be leaving Jasper, the guy that's been there for me through everything. The one person that helped me become a stronger person ever since my dad left. I'd miss him so much, and I didn't realize it until now.

"Do you really have to go..?" Jasper asked me sighing,

"I don't want to, but it's what my mom needs- A whole break from this town."

"I need to say something very important before you leave, and I'll probably sound so selfish waiting until the last minute but-" Suddenly, my phone started ringing.

"Sorry it's just Khloe, she's probably wondering where we are. Be back in a jiffy!" I squeezed his shoulder reassuring him that i'd be back.

Khloe is my other best friend. We've known each other since we were in Preschool. 

"Hello?" I said into the receiver.

"Hey! Where are you?! I've been outside Dunkin Donuts for about 15 minutes. Aren't you coming??"

"Crap! I completely forgot, it's just that Jasper swung by and we were having a chat. We'll be there in a couple minutes!"

"Hmm.. I swear Jasper mentioned he was gonna go to his Dads place to grab his golf clubs."

"Eh, i'm not too worried about it. See you in five."

I hung up the phone before she could say anything, I was really curious to what Jasper had to say. And everyone knows that Khloe can talk for hours. Literally, hours of her non stop rambling. I quickly made my way back into the room where I left Jasper.

"Soo, what'd Khloe want." Jasper asked running a hand through his hair.

"We were supposed to meet her at Dunkin twenty minutes ago," I said laughing,

"Shoot! I got so caught up with wanting to tell you that thing. I forgot the real reason I came to get you."

"Now you can finish, I'm sure Khloe can wait a couple more minutes."

"Nah, it's okay. You know how she gets when she doesn't get her caffeine. Plus, it wasn't even that important." Jasper said giving me a small smile.

I nodded at him, and walked out of the room. He soon followed. I kept thinking back to what he was gonna tell me. He looked so gloomy and I knew better than to push him to tell me what was on his mind. He'd do so when he was ready.

"Mom! I'm heading out with Khloe and Jasper. Be back later tonight!" I yelled at the top of my lungs.

"Jesus woman, go ahead and blow my eardrums out. Not like I need these things to HEAR or anything." Jasper said. And he was back to being the sarcastic guy I knew and loved.

"Shot Gun!!" I yelled running towards the red truck.

"We're literally the only two people Aves..." Jasper said chuckling.

"You never know when someone can pop up and take my reigning score of Shot Gun." I said shrugging my shoulders.

We drove all the way to Dunkin Donuts while singing to some Christmas jams. Even though it was May. What can we say? We loved some good ol' Jingle Bells. We saw Khloe running out of her truck wearing the shortest pair of shorts ever. I swear she can pull off anything. No wonder so many guys are after her.

"WHAT TOOK YOU GUYS SO LONG?!?! I almost died from lack of caffeine!" She said dramatically. 

"Chill your tits out Khlo, we're here now." Jasper said rolling his eyes.

"AVA IM GONNA MISS YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!! UGH, Why does my only best friend have to leave!" Khloe said while hugging me a little too tight.

Jasper kept rolling his eyes at Khloe. For some reason, he never liked her. I had no clue why. They just never got along. They always bickered about every little thing. Not to sound too full of myself, but sometimes I felt that they competed for my attention. There's enough Ava to go around. Ew did I just say that? Sorry.

"Guys it's getting close to 10,  I should get home to get my things in the car.." I said rubbing the back of my neck.

"Of course! Wouldn't want the Cali Life getting away from you!" Khloe said blowing me a kiss while running to her car. "See ya!"

"Bye!!" I yelled back.

"Damn, I can't believe you're already leaving.. I-I'm really gonna miss you.." Jasper added catching me off guard.

"Yeah.. Me too." I didn't realize the close proximity between us, until now.Jasper quickly embraced me and I felt this sort of spark, when he put his head on mine.

"Aves, We should uh take you home...." He said this while trailing off.

"Uh yeah. Let's go." I couldn't help but think that maybe he had a tiny crush on me. Actually, I could be overreacting. Jasper couldn't be into me that way. Or could he..?
