Ava's POV

----

I checked to see if my mom was gone from the windows. If she knew about me running this late in a new state, she'd freak out. The last thing I needed was her giving me another lecture about safety. If you knew my mom. You'd definitely agree with me.

The coast was clear, so then I started a slow and steady jog towards the bakery. It was completely quiet, and I didn't realize that I got lost. The place I was in looked so shady. I kept jogging towards the last street lamp. As I kept moving I heard some indistinct voices.

"So you're bad mouthing me little boy?!"

"Fuck yeah I am grandpa."

"Grandpa?! IM FOURTY FOUR. I'LL HAVE YOU KNOW I'M AT THE PRIME STATE OF MY LIFE."

I couldn't help but chuckle to myself, this dude was  hilarious. Right as I was gonna leave I heard the sound of skin coming in contact with a head. Then multiple grunts, I took a peak over and a black shadow seemed to be  outnumbered. If I don't step in now they're gonna kill the person.

With every ounce of confidence I had, I said, "Step away from it! Whatever gender it is, or else I'm calling the cops!"

"Shit! RUN!"

As the men sprinted away, the black shadow seemed to be limping. I made my way over to the shadow, discovering it was a guy. He seemed to be my age, and the light of the alley was casting on his face. He had this mysterious appearance to him, and had a subtle jawline with golden shaggy hair. His blue eyes, made me feel like I was in a trance.

"Are you just gonna stare at me, or are you gonna help me up?"The boy said angrily.

"For someone who just got their life saved, you don't seem very grateful." I rolled my eyes.

"Whatever. Just help me up."

I grabbed the boy's hand and saw that he had bruises all over his face. "Geez, you sure took a beating.." I mumbled.

After he was up he snatched his hand away from mine.  "I'm fine. You can go now."

I sighed. "Are you kidding, I'm not gonna leave you here when you're practically a zombie."

"God you're annoying."

"I've been told. Now let's go back to mine. We need to get you cleaned up."

He gritted his teeth," I.Said.I.Was.Fine. You Can GO."

"Well you don't look fine, plus I didn't really sound like i'm giving you an option." I sassed.

That was enough to shut him up and to listen to me. I grabbed my phone and ordered an Uber. A little while later we arrived at my house. He looked shocked to say the least.

"How the hell do you know where I live..? He gave me a wide eyed look.

"What are you talking about, I literally own this house."

"Fuck! You're the new neighbor." He said annoyed.

"Live with it. Also, you're parents seem so nice, I wonder how you ended up so..." I tried to find the right words "Bitchy."

He gave me a dirty look, but stayed quiet.

I unlocked my house door and he stepped inside. "Let's go to the bathroom."

As I was reaching for the first aid I added, "So you never told me your name."

"You don't need to know my name." He replied shortly.

"Dude, I literally saved your life tonight. I deserve to know your name."

We both stayed quiet while I was attending his wounds.

"Chase."

"Huh?"

"My name's Chase." He said while looking me in the eyes.

"Oh um I'm Ava." I said shyly.

After I finished cleaning his wounds, he was looking around the house.

"Where are your parents?"

"Mom's working at St. Bernards Hospital as a nurse."

"And you're Dad?"He said while looking at the family portraits my mom put up.

"Beats me." I said shrugging.

Chase didn't say anything. Honestly, I was glad he didn't. It's like he knew I wasn't ready to talk about it.

"It's nearly 5 in the morning. I gotta get home." Chase said while checking the grandfather clock we had in the corridor.

"I don't think that's a good idea." I said quietly.

"And why is that? Can you not get enough of me?" Chase said smirking.

"Hah! I've met you for an hour and can already tell you're a self centered tool." I said in between laughs. "But do you really want your parents seeing you all beat up. It'll raise tons of questions."

Chase's eyes turned to slits. "Where else am I supposed to go?"

"Well, you can crash here. My mom isn't due for another couple hours anyway."

He looked like he wanted to say something else, but Chase just gave me short yes.

As I was making his bed, he asked me "So why California?"

"What do you mean?" I gave him a questioning look.

"Out of all the places to move, why come to a place where everyone is self absorbed and fake."

"I have no clue why my mom wanted to move here honestly. We don't really talk much."

Before he could ask something else, I said a quick goodnight and made my way into my own room. My phone began to ring and I saw that it was my mom. "Hello?"

"Honey! Hi, it's mom." Did she not know that we had caller I.D in the 21st century. "I was just calling to tell you that Doctor Bill asked me out for some breakfast after work. So I won't be home anytime soon. Bye!" Our phone call lasted a whole minute. I was used to short conversations with her.

I opened up to compose a text message to my group chat with Khloe and Jasper saying how much I missed them but then I was interrupted by Chase.

"Listen, can we not tell anyone what happened tonight. How about we pretend we don't know each other. Plus, school's starting soon and no offense but I don't need to be seen with you. People might get ideas."

I was taken aback by his words. "What ideas?" I tried to stay in my most emotionless face.

"The ladies might think I have a girlfriend. We can't have that." Chase said while winking at me.

People like Chase make me want to move out of this galaxy. Here I thought, that I had finally made some sort of friend. Apart from Lizzie of course.I'm not gonna let Chase think he can run over me like that. After all, people like Chase never change. I used my amazing wit and said:

"Ugh Gross. I should've known you were a player. I wouldn't want to be seen with a lowlife jerk anyway." I tried to mimic him by saying, "People might get ideas."

Something flashed across his green eyes, but I couldn't decipher it. He gave me a harsh stare as he made his way downstairs. I stared at my door, hearing the front door close harshly.

I was alone once again.
