Chapter 19

"Hello? What is it Tina?" Kendrick said on the other line.

"Hey, I found some suspicious activity in the house."

"Tell me." he said urgently. Worried that someone might be listening, I stepped outside to the pool whileJoy was on the couch watching TV and closed the door.

"Okay, so I was in the den and I was calling parents so that Joy could have a little sleepover today. You know, to get her mind off of Q leaving."

"Right."

"And I was looking in the corner and there is a huge blood stain on the floor. It looks like someone tried to clean it up, but it was obviously unsuccessful. I asked Tez about it and he said that some girl, Jenny was being abused by her boyfriend, Albert, and she came here for help, but she had already lost too much blood and he took her to the hospital but they couldn't do anything to help."

Kendrick took a pause before speaking. "Albert is in jail. He doesn't get out for another 3 years or so. Tina, I don't want to put you in danger and tell you to dig deeper but find out as much as you can without making yourself obvious. Can you do that?" he asked seriously.

"Sure. I'll call you back with more info."

"Call me at nine at night so I know that you're safe"

"Will do." and with that, I hung up.

'This is going to be a long day.' I thought.

I opended the sliding glass door and sat on the couch with Joy. She was watching Spongebob and she was really entertained.

"Hey Joy, do you want to go to the store with me and get some food to make at your sleepover?" I asked.

"Yeah!" she said and ran upstairs to get dressed. I later followed behind her. Joy had on a beautiful little pink dress and a pink bucket hat. "I love that outfits Joy." I said looking at the hat. It reminded me of Q. I brushed off my feelings of missing him, so that Joy wouldn't pick up on my emotions.

"Wait downstairs Joy, I'm going to get ready" I smiled at her.

She gladly left the room and I walked down the hall. I was tempted to listen to Tez's door but I decided not to. When I entered my room, I picked up Q's hoodie, folded it, and placed it on my pillow. I decided to put on a white t-shirt and tight fitting dark jeans. I went down stairs and took Joy's hand to go to the store. When we got there, Joy expressed how she wanted "fun food". So I purchased pizza dough, cheese, sauce, meat, graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate bars. We put the bags in the car and got in the car with Murray.

"Tina? Are you okay?" I heard Joy ask me.

"Yes, why do you ask Joy?"I asked half smiling. She gave me the I-know-something-is-wrong-so-tell-me-now look.

"I promise I'm fine Joy." I smiled at her. I couldn't tell her my stresses. I missed Q. I was worried about that girl, Jenny. I was afraid of Tez. I was scared for Kendrick. I needed to hide my emotions better. Joy hugged me in the middle of my thoughts as if she could tell I was thinking too much and I needed to stop. She was right.
