I woke up to a warm ray of sunlight in my eyes. Opening them, I found myself in a sort of hospital wing, except it looked friendlier. There were cheery yellow curtains on a big bay window at the end of the room and a row of eight crisp white beds on either side. The room was flooded with soft evening light. The only reason I believed it was a hospital was the large medicine cabinet near the door. My bed was the closest to the window, and the view was spectacular. Rocky peaks filled the horizon and sparkling lake was in front of it. A beach and a green space with stunning gardens filled the foreground. It felt like a dream.
“Good to see you’re up miss.” A voice said from the French doors
“You startled me. Where am I? It’s beautiful here!”
“Oh of course, you were knocked out when you came. Silly me, I’m Tacita.”
“Where am I” I asked, a little more forcefully this time. I had been locked up twice in the past 48 hours. This was not going to be the third.
“I uhhh can’t, umm, I’m just a nurse…the leaders should be here soon” she looked around confused “Your medicine! That’s why I’m here!” and with that she ran off out of the room.
“Hey! Tacita!” I started. I went to get up and follow her, but it hurt to sit up. I was starting to remember, and feel, the day before more clearly. My clothes had been changed. Instead of purple I was now in blue. I had on loose baby blue pants, and a matching tank top and cardigan. I heard talking in the hallway, and a group of five women walked in. I vaguely recognised one.
“Welcome Fedora. I’m sure you have many questions, but you can’t blame the girl. She isn’t allowed to tell you anything before we do.”
“Are you mayors?”
“We prefer to be called leaders. It sounds less harsh and allows us to forget our past lives. My name is Amalie.”
Amalie was a short older woman with greying brown hair. She looked like a much older version of Oasis. Her demeanor was that of someone who had seen many hardships; which had just made her stronger.
“I’m just confused.” I responded “It’s so nice here, but it can’t be real. There is nothing nice outside the dome. Everyone knows that.”
“Until now, it’s all anyone is allowed to know.” Said the blond girl to Amalie’s right. “You are one of the lucky people who got to leave the confinement of the domes to live a life of freedom. Unless fate wants you to know about us, you won’t.”
“You mean to say everyone who is sent to die, just comes here?”
“No. Some actually do die, or never find us, or we never find them.” one of the other women with replied a sneer. “You’re lucky we found you. Judging by your state, I don’t think you would have found us.”
“That will be quite enough Bellowna.” Snapped a younger woman
I recognized the girl named Bellownaas one of the girls on the long-legged animals. I briefly saw her fighting skills against the accented man; she looked just as strong as she actually was
“Where is here? Who are you! I’ve been asking this the whole time!” I shouted
“This, my dear, is the reason those men came after you. They thought you lived here, and now you do. Welcome to Merrowmoor.”
