Ch. 15 - Dinner

Alice took a seat far from Leo, knowing Loki would probably kill him if he got to familiar with her. His green gaze had turned so dark she could almost hear him thinking out loud.

Leo must had noticed Loki's attitude for he talked to him first,

''You don't mind if I call you Loki ?'' he grinned, ''I mean, since you're familiar with students.''

Loki's teeth clenched and the young girl had to lay a hand on his thigh under the table, trying to calm him down. Against all odds, he leaned back,

''Mr. Fischer.'' Loki impassively retorted, ''Of course, we're not here to talk about grades, are we ?'' he chuckled softly, but Alice heard the hint of disdain in his voice.

Shifting on her chair, Emily cleared her throat, ''You guys know each other ?''

''Yes, we do. Very well." Loki insisted, his piercing gaze fixed on Leo's face.

There was an uncomfortable silence and Alice squeezed Loki's thigh, beckoning him to stop this little game. He shot her a swift glance and put great efforts into changing the subject.

''Emi','' he asked, ''how is your competition going so far ?''

''Well...'' she glanced at her boyfriend, wondering what was happening, ''I'm doing fine. I've been selected.''

Alice frowned,

''A competition ?''

''I'm a swimmer.'' Emily smiled, ''I came back for the annual competition. I feel like I'm ready so, I wanted to try, at least. And... I was selected. Have a medical check up tomorrow.''

''Congratulations, then,'' Alice smiled, ''I didn't know you had this passion. Well, it explains your perfect body shape.''

They both chuckled, warming up the atmosphere, until Leo started to play with fire.

''So, you guys are dating,'' he offered them an innocent smile, his gaze flying from Alice's to Loki's face.

Alice almost choked on her wine. Leo didn't seem to bother and kept talking,

''Isn't it too risky ?'' his eyes narrowed, ''I mean, no offense, but... If it was me, I'd be so scared to get caught by someone.''

Silence fell over the room.

Leo didn't mind eating while everyone was staring at him and Alice knew how this was going to end. She could feel Loki tensing and boiling with anger next to her. He would definitely cross the line tonight.

''Actually, we're not together.'' she suddenly lied, keeping the tone of her voice as normal as possible.

Leo raised his head towards her, hooking up an eyebrow. All eyes on her, Alice felt blood rushing to her face. In the corner of her eyes, she saw Loki's green eyes death-staring at her. Every gear in her head started turning. Inhaling deeply, Alice bit down onto her lower lip. She had to sound convincing now.

''We are just friends, close friends.'' she paused, ''You know, we share the same passion for Literature, so, that's pretty much it.''

Calculated, observant, Leo turned to his girlfriend.

Emily eyed the young girl through strands of her hair, nervously playing with her fork. If the situation was uncomfortable for Alice, Loki's niece had a hard time understanding all the secrecy around this relationship.
