Chapter Seven: Tris
*Same Day as the last Katniss Chapter*
The bus ride to school was surprisingly quiet. It’s only two more days until the test. Everyone huddled into the bus of the Abnegation sector look dead ahead, not moving. The bus comes to a stop in front of the school, and across from where we get off I can see the Dauntless jumping from the train. They look so free, like elegant ravens taking flight, not scared of anything. Today we are taking a practice aptitude test. Slowly walking into the building, I go to my locker and drop my books inside. Susan waits for me outside the door of our first period classroom. She looks very pale and she keeps twirling her fingers nervously.
“Hey.” She whispers as I approach her.
“You’ll do fine.” I say, already knowing what she’s thinking.
“I know, it’s just… You were right the other day, Tris. This is a life decision we are making in two days! I don’t, I just… I can’t handle this anymore!” Susan starts to hyperventilate a bit, and I quickly rush her into the classroom so that she can sit and calm herself down. I see my teacher, a strict Erudite man named Mr. Latier, walks in the room, a man with short blond hair and blue eyes wearing Dauntless black following close behind him.
“Class, this is Mr. Mellark. He will be helping me regulate you practice test today.” Mr. Latier says, moving out of the way, indicating the man, Mr. Mellark, to take over for him. I’m not really paying that close of attention to what he was saying because I was trying to figure out where I had heard that name before. It’s like a faint memory locked in the back of my head, trying to get out, but it just can’t.
“Hello ladies and gentlemen. I’m Mr. Mellark, from the Dauntless compound-, “A couple of cheers erupt through the room from the few Dauntless kids who recognize him. He smiles a bit when one kid exclaims something along the lines of ‘love the Dauntless cake, Mr. M!’. Whatever that means.
“Anyway,” he continues, “Like Mr. Latier said, I will help you with your practice tests. Now, we will have you all drink this serum after we hook you all up onto this machine. This will individually tell us about your strengths and weaknesses in and out of school, as well as let us see memories that may be of importance to when you all go to you Choosing Ceremony.” A few murmurs fill the air, and Mr. Mellark quickly raises his hands, trying to calm the crowd down. “Ladies and gentlemen, there is nothing to worry about. It won’t show you making out with your boyfriends or girlfriends, or we won’t see you all naked in the shower. Only things of importance.” A collective amount of sighs fill the air as he continues. “Now, Mr. Latier and I will start.” He walks back toward our teacher. As they prepare the equipment, a murmur of whispers fill the air. They’re mostly people wondering aloud about what will happen. Soon, Mr. Mellark and Mr. Latier are done, and start hooking people up to the machines.
“Now, this should be painless. No harm will come to you. Wait until we tell you to drink the serum, so that we can get the most accurate results.” Mr. Mellark walks down the aisle toward my desk. Handing me my serum, he pauses a moment, looking at me as a look of recognition crosses his face. “What’s your name?”
“Beatrice.” I say, taking my glass of serum from him.
Disappointment washes over his face. “Oh.” He keeps walking, not glancing back at me. Once all of the serums are passed out, he tells us to drink, and we do.
As soon as the liquid is down my throat, the world fades away. Right before my eyes flashes almost everything about me. My hobbies, my family, even my favorite color (which is black). Titles of books that not even I thought about in years flash before my eyes. I catch a glimpse of Percy Jackson, The Infernal Devices, and Harry Potter. Mostly action books. I see myself doing art and helping Susan with her piano. I also see myself getting a cat out of a tree, as well as helping Caleb get down from the roof when he was 10 and I was eight. Then the most peculiar thing happens. A golden bird-the golden bird- in a circle with an arrow in its beak, the one from my dream, flashes before my eyes. My eyes pop open and I look around and see that everyone else must still be under the serum’s effects. I look at Mr. Latier and Mr. Mellark, who are looking at each other with astonished expressions. I get up and head toward them.
“That is impossible, Peeta. I made this simulation myself, memories from then aren’t supposed to be shown.” I hear Mr. Latier whisper.
“I know, but Beetee, that’s it. It’s Katniss’s, I swear. That is Katniss’s mocking-“
I clear my throat, knowing that an Abnegation can get in a lot of trouble for eavesdropping. Mr. Mellark and Mr. Latier finally take note of me and immediately drop their conversation. Mr. Mellark smiles at me, but Mr. Latier wears his signature poker face.
“Beatrice, you did wonderful.” Mr. Mellark says, smiling at me. “We are dismissing all of the students early today, so you can make your way to your last period class right now.” I nod my head and make my way toward the door. “Oh, and Beatrice, please be careful.” I nod again and continue my way out of the classroom. What did they mean some of those memories were supposed to be shown? And why were they shown to me? Also, why did Mr. Mellark say be careful? I’m only going to Geometry right down the hall. Or did he mean be careful about something else? Strange things have been happening to me lately, and for some strange reason I fear that this is only the beginning.
A.N./: Okay, so I’m not particularly fond of this chapter, one because it's short, and two because I'm much better at writing the Katniss chapters. But this one had to happen. So, did anyone recognize Beetee by his last name? Or did anybody see their favorite fandom? And what does Tris keep seeing in her dream? Also, if you haven’t noticed I’m trying to make Peeta seem like the “Cool dad”, haha! But anyway, vote, comment, and share! Thanks for all the support! <3
