PLEASE READ! The first part of this chapter is basically a summary of the Hunger Games. If you don’t want to read it, you can start reading this chapter where the asterisks (star thingies) are!

“There one was a girl who live in a society that was divided into twelve sections called Districts. There used to be thirteen but the Capitol, the head of the Districts, destroyed it during an uprising. As another punishment for the uprising, the Capitol created the Hunger Games. One boy and one girl, between the ages of 12 and 18, from each district would go into an Arena and fight to the death. One year a young twelve-year-old girl from the twelfth district was chosen to participate but her sister volunteered in her place, knowing that there was a chance that she’d die in the process. Before she left, a friend of hers had given her a pin shaped like Mockingjay.

“Upon her arrival at the Capitol, she was immediately adored by them. She soon gained the nickname “The Girl on Fire” because of a costume she gotten, and when the boy that came with her to the Games, Peeta, confessed his love for her, they were known as “The Star Crossed Lovers of District Twelve”. It was all luxury and riches until she had to go into the Arena. There was immediately bloodshed, and she lost contact with Peeta. She went into hiding, but she was being searched for by an alliance known as the Careers. She had killed two of them at first, and then made an alliance of her own with a girl named Rue from District 11. She was killed right before the girls eyes by another Career and the Girl on Fire killed him. Eventually she reunited with her Peeta, but he had been injured.

“Fast forwarding a bit, after the girl had killed another Career, her and Peeta were the only ones left. Only one was allowed to leave the Arena so they would have to kill each other. But she wouldn’t let that happen. They were going to poison themselves, but the Capitol stopped them, and both of them were allowed to live. After that, the President of the Capitol was after the girl. He claimed that her wanting to take her own life was an act of defiance, not as an act of love. Therefore, he tried to get his revenge against her. He made her go into the next Games where Peeta had to go also.

“It was worse than the last. It was all former Tributes in the Hunger Games competing. After entering the Arena, the Girl on Fire was taken from the Arena, which wasn’t supposed to happen. The only way you get out of there is if you win or if you’re dead, and she was neither. Her rescuers were people who sided with District 13, which was never destroyed.

“They also told her that their plan all along was to get her out of there so that she could become the leader of the rebellion, for they planned on overthrowing the Capitol. They named her after the pin that she had gotten. They called her the Mockingjay. They hadn’t managed to get Peeta out of the Arena, and when they finally rescued him from the Capitol he would never be the same. After a lot of deaths and losses, they had finally overthrown the Capitol. The Mockingjay killed the president and she would have been remembered for decades to come.

*** “But that didn’t happen, for there was another group who came. They thought that the Peace, the time after the Capitol, would not be able to last. They were called the Convergent, who’s mission it was to change the society. It was time for the Mockingjay to rise again, but she couldn’t. The Convergent were too powerful to overcome. She was taken from the world along with many others. When Convergent had won, she was placed into the new system of government: the Factions. She and Peeta, along with their son, were placed into Dauntless. The Mockingjay is still there, hiding from the Convergent, silently waiting for her time to rise again.”

As I finish telling the story to Tris, she looks at me with minor sadness and disbelief in her face.

“That’s impossible,” She says, “the factions rose a hundred years ago. There is no one who could live that long, and even if there were, they wouldn’t be here in Dauntless.”

“The factions didn’t rise a hundred years ago. They rose 13 years ago. I should know. I was there.”

“But how-“

“They gave each and every last person a thing called Memory Serum so that they would forget everything about the Peace, and the Capitol, and anything else they wanted them to forget. They lied and said that the Factions had been around for a century so that it seemed like their government right. The entire plan would have been fool proof, but there was one glitch. The Divergent. They are the only ones who remembered everything the Convergent had wanted them to forget. They are all among us, hiding. You remember the time before the Factions, Tris. That’s why you’re Divergent.”

“But why, Katniss? Why do I remember?” Tris asked me sadly.

“From what I’ve gathered, only people who were personally affected by the Hunger Games remember. Meaning that you, or someone dear to you was a Tribute.”

“Well, obviously I wasn’t a tribute. Thirteen years ago, I was three years old. And as far as I can tell no one in my family took part in this “Hunger Games” thing.” She sound exasperated.

I think about the best way to explain this to her. “Tris.” I say slowly, “Do you know your mother and father’s real names?”

“What? Of course I do.” She says. “Andrew Gale Prior and Natalie Annie Prior, but my mother’s maiden name is Odair.”

“You’re wrong, Tris.” I whisper to her. “Your mother’s married name is Odair.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Your mother’s name is Annie Natalie Odair, maiden name Cresta. And your father’s name is Gale Andrew Hawthorne.”

“How would you know?”

“Because I think I would know the name of my best friend and the woman who one of my good friends married.”

“My parents are Andrew and Natalie Prior!” Tris says defiantly.

“I’m telling you honey, no their not. And if you don’t believe me, ask one of them. Visiting Day is coming up and surely one of them are coming.”

“Katniss, I came here for answers, and all you are giving me is crap! The Hunger Games, the Factions, everything you are saying is a lie!” She says to me, getting up to leave. She was just at the door when I said something to her that caused her to stop.

“Tris, one more thing about the Mockingjay…” I say, hoping she’d believe what I was about to tell her.

“What?” She says harshly, her hand on the knob, her face still not looking me.

“You’ve met the Mockingjay before. You’ve known her just a short while, and you have wanted answers from her when you saw her today.” I say.

“Yeah? And who is that?” She says turning to face me. Her face screamed out anger, but her blue eyes were glowing with curiosity.

“Me, Tris. I am the Mockingjay.”
