Hiding things from our families was a difficult task. Sure, we could have told them, but we weren't ready for that. Neither of us knew how our parents would react. What if they didn't like it? What if they made us break up? What if they decided we shouldn't keep coming back to the summerhouse together? The risk was too high, so a secret it stayed.

"Can I get a cellphone?" I asked my mother as I watched her prepare lunch.

"Why do you suddenly want a cellphone?" she questioned.

"Well..." I didn't necessarily need to lie this time. Klara and I were good friends and all. "I thought that it would be easier to keep in touch with Klara once we go back to school. We never get to do that, because she has a phone and I don't."

My mother dumped a can of mandarin oranges and some cut up bananas into the bowl of Jell-O in front of her.

"Couldn't you email her? Write a letter and mail it?"

I grabbed a spoon off the counter and took a big swipe out of the whipped cream before she could add that in. She shook her head, but smiled at the same time so I knew I wasn't in trouble.

"That's too slow," I answered with my mouth full of whipped cream.

"Don't talk with your mouth full, Sadie." She mixed everything together. "A phone is a big responsibility. I'll talk to your dad, but you have to promise that you'd take good care of it and not lose it or anything."

"I promise!"

I ran up to our room to tell Klara the possibly good news. Needless to say she was about as excited as I was.
