Chapter 14
Laura's POV
''It's about your sister...''
And there.
Everything I wanted.
What I wanted to know.
The truth.
I didn't say anything yet because I really wanted her to explain since she sounded like she know a lot. I mean, of course she know because she was her other daughter.
''Your dad, Damiano, and I, weren't in a good place when I was pregnant with your sister, Vanessa. We had a lot of relationship issues, and as I was getter further in the pregnancy, it got worst. We couldn't stand each other anymore. We really needed a break.''
She paused, still looking at me. But I still didn't understand anything.
''At the time, I was really young and still technically living under my parents' roof. My Mom didn't know I had a boyfriend and definitely not that I was pregnant.''
''But how didn't she notice your tummy? You were pregnant...''
''Well, I had suddenly disappeared for college. But I was actually living with Damiano. So, when I gave birth to Vanessa, my parents really wanted me to come back home for the summer and they insisted. Since I couldn’t come home with a baby, Damiano and I agreed that he would take care of Vanessa and raise her, while I go see my parents. It turned out that my parents were really missing me and so was I, so the summer turned into a year.''
''Didn't Damiano visit or anything?''
''He did. He came to visit one day because he was missing me. At this time we were really young, about 18. So when he came at my house, my parents weren't supposed to be there. I made sure they would be somewhere else. But obviously, karma made them come back earlier and they saw me with Damiano and the baby. After a lot of explaining, arguing, crying and yelling, I was punished until my 21 birthday. I could only see the baby once a month because my parents were that nice.''
''That's horrible what kind of parents would do that!?''
''Well, huney, these were the kind of parents I had, and it maybe explains why you haven't seen a lot of your grandmother. Damiano did an excellent job at raising Vanessa and I was really happy he had put such an important part of his life in raising her. The little after-noon we used to spent together brought us closer and all our arguments seemed to be disappearing.''
She paused.
''I'm going to get water, would you like some?'' She asked me.
''Please''
When she came back, she took a sip of the water and continued her story.
''So on my 21 birthday, we decided to get married. It was the wisest thing to do if I wanted to be completely independent from my parents. Damiano and our friends prepared a small and private event and we got married in one of our friend's backyard. It was really sweet and amazing, even for a small place like this. A few weeks later, I got pregnant again, with you.''
She smiled at me like it was something she was really happy and proud of.
''Now that I was pregnant again, it seemed like the problems came back really fast. Damiano and I weren’t getting along anymore, it was terrible. So we spent 9 months trying to work out our marriage, but even if we kept trying and trying, it didn't felt right anymore. When I had you, we agreed that we had been through a lot and maybe it was better if we lived apart. We didn't want to divorce yet, we really just wanted to take a break.''
She took another sip.
''So, this is when our agreement got settled. Since Damiano had been the one raising Vanessa and I hadn't seen her a lot even if she was my child, he said it would be better for the 3 years old baby to live with him. I agreed. On the other hand, I would raise you since he thought it would be really good for me if I would at least raise and live with one of my children.'' She smiled. ''And it was the greatest decision of my life.''
She teared a little. I went to hug her immediately. What an awesome Mom I had.
''So this is it, Laura. That's why you haven't -really- met your dad and your sister.''
''That was a pretty good explanation. I don't think I could've done better. But I still don't understand why you haven't got back with him yet... You guys are still married, right...?''
''We are. But at one point, we were good raising you and your sister separately and it went pretty well. We didn't have a reason to get back together and we were both scared that we'd have to split again. We haven't divorced yet because I think we both feel like divorcing meant letting go, and not just of each other, but of our story, and our history. It's something really unique and special to both of us and even with the few ups and downs we had, we are still holding on to all of this and we are too attached to let it go...''
Wow. That made total sense. I just couldn't believe my own mother had to go through all of this pain and these emotions in her life for two children. It was a shock learning all these amazing but awful things about my family, but I was really happy. Cheesy as it sounds, my Mom was now a hero to me and I couldn't be prouder to have this messed up family.
