Chapter 36
Laura’s POV
A few weeks later, after Christmas, Ross and I still hadn’t talked. We did for work, it wasn’t that bad, but apart from that, nothing. I even spent my whole Christmas without talking to my ex best friend. How ironic that I had always been scared that a relationship could ruin a friendship. And it sure as hell did in our case.
I was still dating Cody. After my storm had passed, we talked and he apologised and comforted me. Although, he did say clearly that what Ross and I had was totally unhealthy and that I’ll be a lot happier without all that drama. I believed him, I still do, but letting go is harder that I thought.
Tonight is the New Year’s Eve. I believe great things will happen for me in this new year. If it’s going to be without Ross, it will.
I was at this enormous party my Mom’s friends were hosting. There was so many people here, it was amazing. All my family was here: aunts, uncles, cousins and to my surprise, sister and dad. I didn’t mind seeing her here, but him, that was a whole other story.
There was round tables dressed with beautiful white sheets of about ten people all around the majestic room. The middle of the room was cleared because at ten o’clock, the annual New Year’s Eve dance party was starting. That was always my favorite part of this soirée.
This year, my boyfriend was my date, making it my first night accompanied ever. I would never invite people to this annual reunion, it was sacred. This time was different though. I wanted Cody to come and meet everyone.
And he did. And everyone liked him. We went to sit with my cousins to eat and it was really pleasant. After everyone was done eating, the music started slowly and the lights went down a little, leaving us almost in the dark. My cousins and I were obviously the first ones on the dance floor. We always were. It was our thing.
At first, Cody was a little shy. I got it, I was too once, but one you start, you can never stop and this amazing feeling is like taking over your body and invading you space and you get overwhelmed but in an super good way.
Or maybe it’s just what music does to me.
When a spotlight opened itself on the side of the dance floor, I realised we had been dancing for almost two hours. It was time for the End of the Year speech.
Every year my favourite aunt would make her annual speech about what amazing things happened in our lives and the highlights of the year that are worth telling our whole entourage.
“This year was special. Some things changed, some people change, but always for the best.”
I stopped listening and looked towards Cody. His warm smile made my heart melt.
“And I would like to point out that our dear Laura got a job with Disney and is now having her own television show. Congratulations darling!” I smiled at what my aunt had just said. Everyone applauded and smiled at me. I mouthed a few thank you here and there.
“And now I’d want everyone to get on their feet and dance together for the few minutes we have left of this amazing year!” We got up and loud music transported us, making jump and travel around the room. Cody spun me around and kissed me softly.
“Ladies, Gentlemen, there is now only 15 seconds left to this wonderful year! Let’s hear the countdown!”
“10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Happy New Year!!!”
People threw their napkins in the air and started screaming. We could heard a few champagne bottles around the room. Nothing could’ve made me happier in this moment and nothing could ever ruin it. Someone wrapped the arms around me and kissed my neck swiftly. I turned around to face Cody. “I think you missed my lips.” I smirked at him.
