As Ren walked toward the guard shack she saw the guards sitting in the little building. The men inside were talking and not really paying her attention. Ren stomped a little harder on the gravel hoping to wake them from their complacency. The guards continued their conversation with no regard to the little girl walking into the secured area. Ren was really getting angry by this point. She saw the bushes move as the invisible team took their positions waiting for her distraction. She tried singing, no luck. She pretended to talk on her cell phone real loud, nothing. Finally in an act of desperation she picked up a rock and threw it through the window right in front of the men. As it broke the glass the rock hit one of the guards in the face. That's gonna leave a mark, Ren thought. The startled guards jumped to attention and ran out of the guard shack with guns drawn looking for the person who threw the rock. Ren saw the guard she hit was bleeding from the wound on his forehead, Ren started laughing.
“Serves you right for not doing your job,” She shouted.
The guards turned toward the sound of her voice and with guns drawn. “Freeze kid! Make one move and we will shoot.”
“Really? You're going to shoot a kid? I really don't think so and you should be ashamed threatening a child. Wait till my Father and Uncles hear about this. They are not going to be happy. I mean come on it's a deserted old wool mill. Every kid in town has thrown rocks at it. Who knew you guys had moved in. By the way, what are you doing here anyway?”
"That's none of your business kid. This is a Federal installation and a restricted area."
"Hey you two watch this." Ren drew back her arm and swung it in a broad ark pretending to hit one of the guards, even though she was twenty feet away.
Max took that moment to hit one of the guards as hard as he could in the face. The guard fell to the ground unconscious. The other guard watched his partner crumple to the ground in shock.
"What did you do to him? What are you?" The guard raised his weapon and pointed it at Ren. "Move and I shoot." The anger in his eyes could be seen by Ren even at that distance.
"Hey, slow down, I didn't do anything. Your buddy just collapsed. Maybe his blood sugar was low. When was the last time he ate?"
That comment was enough for the guard to question his assumptions and in that split second of doubt Max clocked the other guard and he too crumpled to the ground.
“Nice job 'Uncle' Max.” Ren was jumping for joy as she did her own version of the victory dance.
“Nice dance,” the disembodied voice of Max chuckled. “Let's get the gate open.”
“Max did you shift back?”
“Ya after I took out the second guard.”
“Max you're still invisible,” Ren squeaked.
“I am, hey you got to tell your grandpa it worked. This is amazing.”
“Well, use your radio and call for the others.” Ren headed toward the gate.
Max made the call and told the others they could change after taking the potion and still remain invisible. The word spread like wildfire through the wolf pack. He told the main force that the gate was secured and that the trucks should head in.
Ren and Max waited for the trucks to come into view then Ren hit the button to open the gate. Thanks to some fine work by the contractors who were fixing up the old mill the gate didn't make a sound. The trucks entered the compound and the guards on the wall mistook the trucks for their own, a bad mistake. The doors flung open and then the truck just sat there. By the time the guards grew curious enough to come down from the wall to check out the strange site it was to late. The invisible team pounced on the guards and had them cuffed and gagged within seconds.
Ren's team made their way to the cages and began to free the captives.
“Follow me,” Ren said to the newly released. They walked out the gate and into the waiting truck. The truck sped away to pack headquarters. “Mission Accomplished,” Ren yelled at the top of her lungs. Within moments the doors on the trucks in the compound slammed shut and they pulled away heading home.
Ren poured on her supper speed and ran back to their ride which was a mile back. Ren covered the distance in no time at all. Max followed amazed at just how fast Ren was.
At the truck Max asked Ren if all vampires could run that fast. She smiled at Max and told him she wasn't as fast as other vampires. Max just looked at her amazed.
Back at wolf headquarters the doctors from both groups examined all the former captives. They agreed on a plan and strung IV bags of fluids and gave them each a hand full of pills. Doc Carpenter, the appointed leader of the doctors, addressed the worried parents and loved ones. “They will all be fine. They are dehydrated and a bit malnourished. The IV's will hydrate them. The pills were mostly supplements. There are a lot of bruises and cuts but none serious. We have cleaned them up. After the fluid is administered you can take them home, but no solid food for three days. We don't want to have them being sick from having food introduced to fast. The old bald doctor smiled as the looks changed from worry to joy.
Alpha walked over to the were-wolf from Colorado that Bronson had used in his presentation. “When you are up to it we will put you on a plane home. I have contacted your alpha and he told me to tell you your mate and child are safe. The pack has taken care of them.”
“Thank you Alpha,” was all he could say before shrinking back onto the cot that was set up in the great hall.
The four spent the night in the main hall on cots trying to get some sleep. The little were-bear was afraid of the wolves. Ren sat with her all night. She knew she couldn't miss school tomorrow after the attack last night. Doc Carpenter had kicked everyone else out of the room saying they needed rest.
Ren learned the little bears name was Crystal. Crystal and Ren were a grade apart but Ren had seen her around school. Crystal thought Ren was so nice to stay with her. As Crystal relaxed she finally fell asleep. The were-wolves that were on guard brought another cot for Ren and she was asleep within moments still holding Crystal's hand.
