It was early Monday afternoon when Jeremy went to the airport to catch a charter to the capital's office complex to pick up the Governor. True to her word she was ready to get going at 5:00 PM. The flight to the high school was uneventful. After the day the Governor had the quiet was a welcome relief.
“So Jeremy,” the Governor asked, “just what is the deal with your town? Are you really infested with were-wolves and vampires like Bronson says.”
Jeremy smiled to himself, this was the opening he was waiting for. “Governor, I don't want to speak out of school on the subject so maybe I should just let you meet the townsfolk and make up your own mind.”
“Jeremy, I appreciate you trying to remain neutral and all but I believe that the parents of this town are going to be my best source of information. After all the decision I make now will effect you and your children for years to come.”
“Well OK. We live in a small town with an eclectic group of people. We have three churches in town and most people have no problem with going to each others church for special occasions and programs. We have a couple of professing witches one who claims to be a medium. Some of us work nights, some days, but the one thing we have in common is a respect for each others way of life. Respect is something that comes out of trust and I can say I trust most everyone in town. Now some guy comes to town and says the place is overrun with vampires and were-wolves I got to ask one question. Why? We don't have any murders in town. No one is running around claiming to have seen a vampire or were-wolf. But this Bronson fellow seems to know something our entire town doesn't. This smells like the inquisition to me and we know how well that worked out for the catholic church. I just have to wonder what is this guys agenda. My father was a cop in Boston until he retired ten years ago and he always says follow the money. I'm tellin you Governor someone is making money here and it's not the people of this town.”
“Jeremy you are a well spoken young man. You bring up a lot of questions. You've given me a lot to think about. Thank you.”
“You're welcome mam. Hey, if you look off to your right you can see the school lights. We will be landing on the football field behind the school. You should be able to make it out in a second or two.”
“I see it. This is exciting. I love flying in helicopters but as you can guess I don't get to do it often. So when you offered to shuttle me to this meeting I was so excited.” The look in the Governor's eye was that of a little kid just before they go on a roller coaster.
The pilot brought the big bird around the school one more time then gently landed on the football field. “That last spin around was for you Governor. Hope you enjoyed it.”
“I did young man and thank you for a wonderful ride. I look forward to the ride home tonight.”
“Well Gov we may have to buzz the lake if you're up for it.”
She got a devilish smile on her face and said, “I know I am, are you?”
Just then Jeremy opened her door and offered a hand to help her out. She put down the headset and smiled at the pilot and winked. He started laughing and waved her goodbye.
As they approached the school before the crowd started to swell with the power brokers and the press the Governor said, “Thank you again Jeremy, You have given me a lot to ponder. I wish my staff could put things out there in as clear and concise a manor. I know where you stand and I think it is the right place. So shall we greet the vultures?”
“Yes mam.” As they walked into the building Jeremy caught Ren's eye and smiled, letting her know everything was on track.
