It turns out that the bus took me back to school, and the demons wouldn't shut up.
She played you, son.
I like her.
So you mentioned.
I got off the bus and decided to go home. It was about 12:30 and I was starving. When I got home, I could still smell the ash and faint perfume from Mary. I ran a hand through my hair and untaped my wings. The familiar stinging was there as I removed the sticky thing from my feathers.
Once the tape was off, I stretched my wings and went to the cupboard.
And I thought I was supposed to be the evil one.
What?
I mean, I'm proud of you, but damn.
What are you talking about?
I'm talking about Mary.
I closed my eyes, sighing. Kicking her out was the wrong thing to do, but I didn't have a choice did I? I made some soup and took a seat on my bed, turning the TV on. Same bullshit news and politicians fucking everyone over, boring. I changed the channel and more news came on.
Another child went missing today from Kentucky county, one of many. Three more bodies have been found and police are beginning to wonder if we have a serial killer on our hands. Police are warn-
I shut off the tv and took a few bites of my noodles. I wanted to ask my dad where he was, but Lilith told me not to think about it- oops.
Your mother told you I escaped?
I sighed, haven't you?
When I learn how to go about escaping the pits of hell, I'll come see you. How'd she tell you I escaped?
A letter.
You idiot, don't you see?
I frowned and glared at the floor, because where else was I supposed to focus my anger. What?
You can't send a fucking letter from the pits of hell, are you that thick?
I didn't bother replying because I knew he was right. The letter, the lack of communication, the news report. Wow, getting played by your mom hurts more than you think.
Frowning, I thought, so what does she want then?
Children, obviously.
Wow, thanks. Why now though? And how long until the Angels put her pack into hell?
Please, the Angels are too high up on their mighty horse to notice. They'd only come running if they saw their world on fire.
So what are you saying?
It's up to you, my boy.
So that's not happening. I stopped listening to and continued eating my soup. I don't know when, but at some point, I fell asleep.
When I awoke it was dark out and the clock read 11:42. God, I need more sleep at night. Then again, what teen gets a full night of sleep?
I got out of bed and decided to go for a walk. I chose not to tape my wings because I was capable of holding them down for a period of time. The only reason I tape them, is because I'm afraid I'll forget and they'll just open in front of people.
My urges have calmed down and I haven't gotten one since Mary. Maybe almost killing someone sated my thirst for a while.
I threw on a loose sweater and low hanging sweats, then proceeded to exit the building. I found myself wandering to the school in the brisk wind of the night, not knowing why. When I arrived, I saw a familiar bus coming down the street and on a whim, I boarded.
The bus took me downtown and I stared blankly out the window until I saw that same familiar black hair. I got up and almost sprinted to the front of the bus. "Stop, please." I demanded. The driver sighed, but nevertheless pulled over.
I hopped off the bus and it being so late, there were no cars so I jogged across the road. A bulk looking man was standing over Mary. She stood quite tall at 5'7", but the man was towering over her menacingly. She was still wearing the t-shirt and sweats she'd been wearing when she left my place the other day. A wave of guilt came over me.
As I approached the man, the smell of rotten eggs and trash overwhelmed me. Demon.
"Get away from her." I said, pulling him back. Mary was somewhat trembling, from cold or fear, I didn't know, but when she saw me, her gaze was as cold as the air.
"Whatcha gonna do, pretty boy?" The demon taunted. He wore a torn leather jacket and he had a pot belly underneath his biker shirt. He work a choker and a bandana, it was pretty much a teen going through a bad emo phase.
"That depends, are we going to do this the easy way, or the hard way?" I asked him as if he had a choice to walk away.
"Well, I wouldn't min-" before he could finish his sentence, I'd reached down into my boot and pulled out my knife. Without a moment of hesitation, I threw it at his head. The demon was too enthralled with his foreplay to notice until it was too late. The knife embedded itself in his forehead and soon enough the body disappeared.
"What the hell? Did you just kill a man?" Mary asked disbelievingly as I went to retrieve my knife from the pavement.
"It wasn't a man." I declared, wiping off my knife on my sleeve.
"It sure looked like a man!" She cried, "Oh my god, I'm calling the police." She panicked for a moment, but I doubted she even had a phone.
"Yeah, okay." I gave a fake laugh as I called her bluff. "That was a possessive demon, you're welcome."
"I didn't say thank you." She mumbled, crossing her arms. I could see the goosebumps on her arms and I sighed.
"I didn't take you for unappreciative." I commented as she huffed angrily.
"How do I know you're not lying about the demon thing?" She asked me skeptically.
"Hmm, let's see, there's no body? Or you could just remember that I have wings and our world are completely different. Couldn't you smell his undead odour?" I questioned, looking her up and down.
"I thought that was just hobo smell..."
"Fair enough." I shrugged, about to leave, but then I took a deep breath. "Let's go."
"Go where?" She almost perked up, but she tried to hide it.
"Don't ask dumb questions." I stated, rolling my eyes.
"Let me grab my stuff." She muttered, turning around. She picked up a mug, a newspaper, and burnt blanket before turning back to me. "Normally I'd be more hesitant, but I have no where else to go, so..."
"Yeah, sorry about that." I said, rubbing my neck awkwardly.
"Well, it's not like you can change the past." She paused for a moment, "Wait, can you?" I scoffed before walking away. I could hear her bare feet on the sidewalk and I groaned.
I turned around to face her and lead her into an alley. "Is this my death?" I ignored her. I took off my shirt and handed it to her. "Woah, at least take me on a date first." She eyes my chest appreciatively though. I rolled my eyes and grabbed her in my arms, carrying her bridal style. With that, I unwrapped my wings. I heard her gasp, but I ignored it and took off into the sky.
It was a far walk as it was, let alone in bare feet. I flew us back to my place and Mary seemed to be in shock the entire time, hardly even breathing. At one point I grew concerned, but occasionally she'd arch her neck, assuring me that she was still alive.
What a day.
