"Ugh, Bostyn, i'm going to cry. I know it." Ava said as we stood outside the gym door entrance. She was attempted to zip up her gown up before we were told to enter the gym and go to the stage.

All of our classmates were talking around us, the small hallway we were all packed into made us all feel squished.

"Try not to cry until after." I put my hands on her shoulder. "Or try not to cry at all. Your mascara will run."

"Right!" She said as she sniffed in and took a deep breath. "Why am I even freaking out? We're going to the same college. It's not like we're going to be separated like most of these best friends are."

Two girls in our grade who are best friends named Jada and Lilly turned around and gave Ava a dirty look. "Thanks, Ava." Jada said, anger in her voice and on her face. I was assuming she was so upset because she was staying in Canada for college and Lilly was going to study abroad.

"Sorry." Ava rolled her eyes.

"Have you seen Shawn?" I asked her as I turned to look.

"I would assume he's with Steve."

"Speaking of Steve." I grinned.

Ava's cheeks got red by her mouth. "There's nothing to talk about."

I gave her a weird look. "Yeah, sure."

"Don't yeah sure me Bostyn Jackson!" She shoved my shoulder, almost making me fall in my high heels. "Anyways, zip your gown up, they might let us go in soon!"

A little bit after Ava said that a pair of heels clicked down the hallway and a lady appeared in a light blue pant suit. "Seniors, lets go! Here comes the rest of your lives!"

-

"Congratulations, Bostyn!" I heard for the two-hundredth time, not that I was complaining.

I turned and saw Steve. "Thank you, you too!" I smiled.

"I know we've had our differences, but come here!" He opened up his arms and I gladly hugged him. Although Steve and I have had our differences, he's still always been a good guy, and for the time being, he's making my friend happy.

"We're going to head back to my place, sure you don't want to come?" Ava asked me as she hugged me again.

"I'm sure, I need to do some last minute packing before my parents drop me off tomorrow."

"I'm getting dropped off on Monday, can you survive a day without me?" She asked, half joking but half serious.

"Of course I can." I said as I waved goodbye to Steve. "But I cant survive two days."

Ava laughed. "I can't either."

"See you Monday, Bostyn." Steve waved goodbye to me as he started the car and backed out of my driveway.

"I'm sure you're feeling a ton of mixed emotions." My mom said behind me, appearing on the porch.

"You can't even imagine." I frowned.

"Oh, I can." She sat down in the one rocking chair and patted on the other one, signaling for me to sit down.

I sat down next to her and looked at her. "I can't tell what I feel. Sadness? Yes. Joy? Yes. But it's kind of hard to tell them apart."

"You'll figure it all out." She patted my knee. "Life's going really fast for you right now, I mean you just finished school and now tomorrow you're heading off to prepare for the start of the spring semester at college."

"I don't think i'm ready for this." I said, my heart racing. "Maybe I should reapply in the summer, or the fall."

"Nonsense, Bostyn." My mom shook her head no. "Of course you're ready for this, you always have been."

"I don't feel like I am."

"And you won't, not for a while at least. But when you do, you'll know, and you'll feel great. You just need a little time to smooth out all the bumps in the road in your life, but you will."

"So positive, so optimistic." I laughed.

"It comes with being a mom." She grinned. "At least I think it does. Now come on, the whole family is waiting for you inside."
