"Shawn!" I rushed into our science class and took a seat at the lab desk next to him. "This seat taken?" I asked.
"By you." He laughed as he looked at me. "What's your reason for rushing in here?"
"How was first hour?"
"I knew it." Shawn gave me a knowing look. "It went fine, i'm sure Ava texted you all about it."
"Minor details." I shrugged.
"Minor details? Sure." He rolled his eyes. "I'm sure it was more like paragraphs."
"Maybe." I said, even though I already knew that he knew she had filled me in completely. "But I want to hear your side of the story, all of it."
"Good morning class." Mrs. Peters walked in and greeted us.
"Talk later?" I whispered to him.
"Can't, have to help Jordan set up for his party tonight. You going?"
"I don't think so."
"Why not?" Shawn said, a little too loud. Mrs. Peters looked at us, but then she looked away when we became completely silent.
"Not really my thing. You know that."
"Please come, Bost." Shawn gave me puppy dog eyes. "It will be fun, I promise."
"You will have lunch in half an hour, then you will come back to this class, just so you all know." Mrs. Peters said as she started writing on the white board.
"Scratch that, i'll fill you in at lunch." Shawn said as he picked up his pencil and started copying what was on the board.
-Lunch-
"Want my grapes?" Shawn asked as he slid his cup of grapes across the table to me.
"Thank you." I looked around to see if anyone else was coming to sit with us. "Now spill at least some news before anyone else sits here."
"Everything went fine. All they did was just exchange an awkward look before Ava looked away. I caught them glancing at each other a few times throughout class, that's it."
"That's all?" I asked.
"Yup, that's all."
"What's all?" Steve asked as he slid into the booth next to Shawn.
"Nothing." Shawn and I said in perfect sync.
"Weirdos." Steve grabbed a bread stick off of Shawn's tray and started eating. "Can I have a sip?" He asked me as he grabbed my chocolate milk and took a drink out of it.
"Have it all." I rolled my eyes.
"You're the best, Bosty." He winked.
"Don't call me that, or ever do that again." I said as I scooted out of my side of the booth.
"Hey, where you going?" Shawn asked me.
"I'm gonna go sit somewhere else."
"Why?" Steve frowned.
"Stay." Shawn looked me in the eyes.
I was about to sit back down, but then I saw Steve smiling at me. In respect for my best friend, I have to hate him too, especially because of everything he did to her. "Um, i'll see you in class, Shawn. Thanks for the grapes."
Shawn opened his mouth like he was going to say something then closed it. "No problem." He finally said while I was walking towards my friend Amanda.
-Fourth Hour-
"What was lunch all about?" Shawn asked as soon as I stepped into our fourth hour.
"Just wanted to sit with Amanda, is that okay?" I asked, not meaning for it to sound as snippy as it came out. "Plus, I just know that Ava would not like me sitting at the same table as Steve, so i'll leave that to you."
"C'mon, Bostyn." He pleaded. "We finally get lunch together and you won't sit with me?"
"Maybe tomorrow."
"And tomorrow you'll say, maybe next week."
"Not true." I argued.
The bell rang, signaling that class was starting, and the next lunch was starting, too, Ava's lunch. "Come to the party with me tonight." Shawn said out of nowhere.
"Already told you, I don't want to."
"It's senior year, Bostyn. Are you really going to let it fly by without doing anything?" He asked me. Two worksheets were placed on the table for us.
"Thank you." We both said in sync. Shawn turned to me again. "After this year i'm going to the University of British Columbia and you're going to the University of Victoria, we don't have much time to spend together."
He had a point, and he knew he did. "I'll think about it."
"Pick you up at six." He said as he stared down at his worksheet, a big smile on his face.
