I shot Zach a panicked look and rushed to the door. I grabbed the car keys off the coffee table and ran down the stairs. I didn't look back, but I could tell Zach was following me. I got in the drivers seat of the car and started the engine. Zach reached the car and pulled me out telling me I was to upset to drive to San Diego. I sighed and moved into the passenger seat.
The drive to San Diego was around 2 hours, but it felt much longer. I wanted nothing more than to be in the hospital beside John, holding his hand and telling him that everything will be ok. John was in the hospital before when he was only a couple of weeks old, the doctors told us to take him for frequent check ups, I guess we never did because we were so caught up with tour.
We reached San Diego hospital around 2 in the afternoon. Before the car stopped I bolted out and ran for the front door. I could hear Zach yelling at me to slow down, but I couldn't stop my legs. I ran up to the lady at the front desk and checked in.
"Room 207." She said while handing me a visitor pass.
I got in the elevator and pressed the button for the second floor. I impatiently tapped my foot while the elevator seemed to take forever to get up to the next floor. When the doors opened I bolted out, reading every room number on my way down. 201, 202, 203, 204, 205, 206, and finally 207. I pushed open the door to find Mr. and Mrs.Porter sitting on the side of the hospital bed. My eyes darted to the bed centered in the middle of the room. John was lying there with his eyes closed, he had 3 machines hooked up to him. His heart monitor bounced up and down normally. I could feel myself begin to faint, I fell backwards but someone's arms caught me. That's all I remember before I passed out.
I woke up in the hospital waiting room. I shifted around a bit before I realized I was sitting in someones lap. I turned my head and made eye contact with Zach's blood shot eyes.
"Hi." He whispered.
I continued to look at him, I had no words.
"You hungry?" He asked with a slightly louder tone.
I shook my head. The thought of food made me sick to my stomach.
He wrapped his arms around me while I cried into his chest. We sat there like that for what seemed like hours before someone interrupted us with a clear of their throat.
"You're all clear to go see John now." The nurse said while pointing to the sliding glass door.
I shot up out of Zach's lap and followed the nurse down the hallway. We reached 207 and I entered. John was awake and barley mouthed the word "mommy". It took everything I had not to break down in tears right then and there.
"Hi baby, mommy and daddy are here." I whispered while grabbing his tiny hand.
His hair was a mess, he had sweat forming on his forehead, and the bags under his eyes were a dark purple. I could tell that he was in pain and it killed me inside realizing I couldn't do anything to help him.
He shut his eyes for a nap. Still holding onto his hand I rested my head on a edge of his bed. Zach was beside me with his arm going around my back and his fingers curling around my waist. We stayed in the same position for hours.
The heart monitor began to spike, it made loud alarm noises as the doctors rushed in. They pushed Zach and I off to the side while they rushed to help John. The heart monitor continued to beep until it fell silent and the line was perfectly straight.
"NO, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" I screamed while being dragged out of the room.
