After I changed out of my Gym clothes, I ran to the window with the rest of the class. Steph was sitting on the hood of the police car crying while talking to an officer. We see them having a decent conversation before hopping into the police car. A Gym teacher walks through the door and I ask him what happened. "None of you're business," he said. During Language Arts, my final period, I began to piece together the events. First me and Harland get into a fight and she goes missing the very next day. After that somebody starts a fire in the school and TODAY, the whole incident with Stephanie happens. I write all this down in my LAL notebook and try and piece together the clues. That's when it hits me: The only person in the janitors office besides me and Dzosh (who has either gone missing too or is just avoiding me) was Stephanie. She was in charge of preparing for our next Science project for class. And our Science project today was experimenting with sulfuric acid, crystals, liquid nitrogen, and the effects of potassium permanganate. But I remember seeing Stephanie pull something out of her pocket while I was walking by. It was filled with a greenish purple liquid or goo of some kind. And as class went on, the more I remembered. I began to have an idea. I faked a stomach virus and got sent home early. Mom (who was all better now) went out to run some errands. I ran down the hall and to the computer. I quickly google searched: What are the effects of sulfuric acid, crystals, liquid nitrogen, and potassium permangante.
The google search automatically corrected my sentence to what are the effect of potassium permanganate, crystals, sulfuric acid, and manganese heptoxide. As I turns out, little Stephanie wasn't so innocent after all. I went to videos and found out that by coating the crystals and dispensing different chemicals into a tissue, you can create a fire. There was only one thing left to do, just to make sure Stephanie was truly guilty of the school fire. I googled manganese heptoxide and went to images. And that was the last piece of the puzzle. The weird liquid that Stephanie kept in that little bottle was actually heptoxide, which she mixed into the rest of the chemicals. I grinned. SHE might have something to do with Harland's disappearance. I grabbed a piece of paper and wrote SUSPECTS in all capital letters, underlining it. And I wrote Stephanie Roans on the very first column.
I came to school the next day and told Nina all about Stephanie. At first she thought I was insane, but it started to make sense. There was a huge crowd by the door. It looks like Stephanie came back from the police station and told everybody what happened. "I wandered off the hiking trail and got chased by this creepy guy. He was wearing a black hoodie and chased me down with an axe before I fell and hit myself unconsiouse on a rock." Everyone wanted to know more about what happened. Even I wanted to hear the end of her story before confronting her. So she continued her story. "After I woke up, I was coughing up blood and I scraped my leg too. The guy was nowhere to be seen. I screamed and started limping towards where everyone else was just as the guy showed up again and started following me, dragging his axe behind him. If you guys never pulled me out of there, I might have DIED!" Everyone had a million questions. One kid asked if he had anything t do with the school fire. Nina nudged me with her elbow. "No," I said. "SHE DID!"
"What are you talking about?" Stephanie looked just as confused as everyone else."Steph, were you at the janitors room when the fire started?" She nodded, but claimed that there was nothing to start a fire with. "I googled it last night. You had all the ingredients to start a chemical fire: permanganate, sulfuric acid, crystals, and manganese heptoxide, which you used to make the fire instantly blaze up." She looked shocked but still confused. Then her face started to get red. I didn't know if it was because I interrupted her story or because I'm right. "You idiot! We didn't USE heptoxid in our Science project! That was liquid nitrogen!" That's when I pulled the bottle out of her pocket. Then I reached in MY pocket and took a picture of the chemical that I printed out last night. "Does THIS look like your little bottle?" Everybody gasped. Stephanie pulled the bottle out of my hand. "Give me that! That was a present from my grandmother, not a chemical." Nina rolled her eyes. "I bet you're making up the thing about the killer too! That was just so nobody suspects YOU are the true killer." She punched my in the stomach and started to tear up. She calmed down and said that I was insane. "OK then, what did he look like?" She backed up. "I don't know! He was wearing a-" Noah interrupted. "...a white mask." Steph nodded. "Yeah. How did you now?" Noah just pointed behind Stephanie and started shaking. "No. He's right behind you..."
I turned around and saw a man wearing a white face mask and a black hoodie behind Stephanie looking through the window. And there was a knife in his hand......
