Annoyingly, Lexy was choosing now to be silent, refusing to talk until they were in the castle. George was doing likewise so that by the time the four of them finally arrived at their 'office' of sorts, the suspense had been well and truly built.
"Do you want to tell them or should I?" Lexy asked George, bouncing up and down on the desk which was an impressive feat considering it was made of wood.
George grinned, "I think you - "
"You and Fred aren't the only ones," Lexy cut in excitedly.
Aubrey and Fred exchanged a look of vague concern before taking a seat on the desks across the aisle, as Fred said: "Well go on then, Lexy, put us out of our misery."
"Okay, okay are you ready for this? You're not ready - "
"WE ARE!" Aubrey interrupted, her nerves intensifying every second, "Believe me, hon, we are, so tell us or I might actually have to push you into the Black lake ... sorry."
"Well, jokes on you, that's what I want because there are merman down there," Lexy replied, a little taken aback, "You're not ready - "
"Okay, so you two had been gone for a bit," George took over, earning him a grateful smile from Fred, "About twenty minutes, I think? Anyway, it was about that long and we saw these two boys acting really suspicious and they kept looking over at the judge's stand. When you've been in the trouble business as long as we have, you start to notice these things. So, whilst Angelina and Katie were pondering going for a swim to pass the time, we snuck off to see what was going on."
"So at first, it seemed like nothing was happening, they were just secretly dating or something until one of them said something about going up there and taking one of the judges ... bit of a red flag. We continued to listen, thinking maybe they just hated the competition or something, you get nutters like that until one of them hit his head on a beam - "
"Ha! Can't believe we missed that!" Fred sighed.
Aubrey raised an eyebrow, "It's not that funny..."
"And said something like, 'Merlin's beard, I can't wait until this stops, I hate being connected to you' ... like we said you're not the only ones," George finished, taking a seat back on the desk.
This was followed by silence, Aubrey trying to figure out if there was any other way the conversation could have been interpreted. Before she could get too into it, Fred decided to ask a question.
"What happened next?"
George shrugged, "They disappeared into the crowd, we didn't see them again - "
"Ooh, I remembered something!" Lexy cut in, "We did see something - "
"We did?" George asked.
"Fine, I did," Lexy corrected, rolling her eyes, "I had actually forgotten about the beam thing but when the tall boy hit his head on the low hanging beam, the other winced like even more than the one who'd actually hurt himself ... I remember thinking it was odd."
At this, Aubrey leant forward onto her hand, in a typical thinker pose, her brow furrowed, "Wait ... what?"
"He winced when the other one hit his head," Lexy repeated.
"I know ... that doesn't happen to us," Aubrey murmured, "Look."
With a sudden force, she whacked her hand down on the desk, staring at Fred intently the whole time. Whilst Fred did wince a little, it was clearly a response to her pain rather than any of his own.
