Chapter 22: Team Hebi

Sasuke led me silently through the calm forest.

I wonder who his 'other members' are. I just hope they aren't gonna annoy me.

I let my mind wander. Surely it wouldn't be a big team and it has to be people Sasuke tolerates so maybe they won't be that bad. I sighed. Maybe.

We ended up an front of 3 people surrounding a campfire. I immediately recognized all of them from when Pein made me study basically every ninja alive. Or atleast every ninja worth studying. I had info on all of then without even really meeting them.

"Who's this bitch?" The red head, Karin, asked in an annoying voice.

Ignoring Karin, Sasuke turned around to face me.

"Welcome to Team Hebi." He said.

"Who's this hot chick?" The white haired guy, Suigetsu, asked. He stepped over and sling his arm around my neck. Sasuke rolled his eyes at his flirty teammate.

"Seeing as Sasuke probably won't introduce us, I may as well introduce myself. I'm Suigetsu and what's your name, babe?" He asked.

"Echo." I said simply.

"That's such a stupid name. Who in their right mind would name their kid Echo? No wonder your such a weird bitch." Karin said in a bitchy tone.

I sighed and glared at her slightly.

"One of my sensei's gave me that name so if I were you, I'd shut up. Besides I don't think you have any room to talk about bad names, Karin." I said in a threatening tone.

She paled slightly and I have her a 'Come at me, bro' kinda look.

"Wait. How the hell did you know my name?!" Karin asked glaring at me.

"I've studyed pretty much every ninja who has an interesting kekkei genkai, went rogue, or is above jonin satus." I said shrugging.

"So you've researched me then?" Suigetsu asked.

At my nod, he continued. "Tell me what you know about me then."

"Suigetsu Hozuki. Male. Born February 18th. Water nature type. Had a brother named Mangetsu. Has a dream of collecting all of the swords of the Seven Swordsmen Of The Mist. Currently after Kisame Hoshigaki's sword, Samahada." I said boredly.

The look one his face was priceless.

"You knew all that just from memory?" He asked astonished.

"Yep. I studyed all three of you and many others. Now can we please move on with the conversation." I said yawning.

"We probably need to get some rest. We need to start moving tomorrow morning." Sasuke said changing the subject.

"Good. I need my beauty sleep. Sasuke, why don't you come sleep next to me?" Karin asked batting her lashes at him shamelessly.

"No thanks." Sasuke said boredly.

Karin huffed and went to go set up her sleeping bag.

"I'll take first watch." I said.

The three boys nodded and went to go lay down as well.

I hopped into a nearby tree and plopped down, laying my back against the trunk.

Everyone settled in and peaceful silence filled the air.

"You need to get sleep too, you know." I heard from above me.

"Sleep is for the weak." I said jokingly. I looked up at him and met his blood red eyes.

"You've been pretty quiet." Sasuke said dropping down on the branch next to me. I was quiet a moment.

"To be honest, I'm just curious as to why you have me here." I said giving him a sideways glance.

"What do you mean?" Sasuke asked raising an eyebrow innocently.

"If you don't wanna tell me that's fine but I can't say I'm not curious. You and I both know I'm not really that useful to you seeing as I won't fight a fellow Akatsuki member." I said looking up at the star filled sky.

"I think...that you'll just have to wait and find out." Sasuke said following my eyes to look at the sky as well.

"The one thing I'm not good at." I said chuckling slightly.

I felt him shift his eyes to me but didn't turn to look at him.

"I'm curious too. Why did you join the Akatsuki? You seem like the type who would be living in a village and doing good for the world yet you aren't. You're doing the opposite." Sasuke said, his eyes looking directly at my face.

I let out a long sigh and rubbed my eyes.

"It's a long story. To spare you the details, I use to live in a village but was treated horribly. It's kind of put me off of living in a village and to be honest, I would be too scared to ever live in a village. I don't think I ever could." I said trying to keep from thinking back to the old village.

"That makes sense but why join the Akatsuki?" He asked.

"For the same reason your going after Itachi. Revenge." I explained.

I studied the stars closely and held back a tear, thankful that it was too dark to see clearly.

"Revenge never helps though. It's not worth it because the pain always stays anyway." I said sadness lacing my voice.

"Are you trying to convince me not to complete my goal?" He asked.

"No. I'm just warning you. Once you do something, you can't take it back. Life isn't something we can just play with." I said quietly.

A single tear betrayed me and slid down my cheek. Sasuke reached his hand forward and wiped it away.

"Get some sleep, Echo. I'll take over." He said knowing that I didn't want to talk anymore.

"Thank you...For listening." I said.

I didn't wait for his response as I dropped down from the tree and laid down on the cool grass. My eyes glanced up at the night sky one more time before closing and allowing me to drift off into a calming sleep.
