New York City, 1966
"I can't believe he said that to you!" You say incredulously.
It's Friday, the last one in August. Just like every month, you and your friend Nancy are out having dinner together.
"I know Ana! It was insane!" She continues speaking about her story, telling you every detail about her horrible date.
The man had no regards for Nancy at all, just speaking about himself and not letting her get in a word. He was nothing like someone that Nancy would pick for herself. Her mother chose him and set up the date, Nancy just showed up.
You loved your friend but you had to admit that she gave you a headache sometimes. When she was in a mood, like right now, she will ramble on for hours and hours. Knowing her words won't stop for a while, you tune out her voice and look around at the other customers in the restaurant.
Your roaming eyes were stopped when they met a pair of cold, blue-grey ones. The person who owns the hard gaze was a rather handsome looking man. He looked to be in his late twenties, twenty-seven if you had to be specific. His hair was a dark brown colour against his light coloured skin. There was a small amount of stubble along him shapely jawline.
Your gaze flickered back to his eyes when you finish studying his face, and you found it hard to look away. His eyes showed so much anger as he sat by himself. Why? You always were a curious person about others emotions.
"Analise Anderson! Are you even listening to me?" Nancy shouted, causing you to snap out of your trance.
"Oh gosh! I'm sorry Nance, I zoned out for a moment there." You apologize.
"It's fine. I was in a ramble again wasn't I?" She asks, the question being rhetorical.
Nancy sighs heavily before looking at her watch. "Oh my Ana! I've got to go. I have to pick up Mum from work. I'll talk to you later." She exclaims before rushing away.
You stare at the door in shock and disappointment. Her mother is unable to drive so it's no suprise to you that Nancy had to pick her up. Your best friend just left you will an expensive bill you were going to split, that you now have to pay yourself.
You look around the restaurant again as the confusion wears off. The man you were having a staring contest with before is still sitting in the same spot, watching you.
Your eyes meet again for a moment before you look away. You sighed heavily and decided that it was time for you to go. So, you grab your purse and after paying for the meal, walk out of the restaurant.
You walk out of the main doorway and into the crisp August air. Immediately, you headed east on foot towards your home. It is only a few blocks away so walking there isn't a problem.
As you walk along the footpath, you hear footsteps behind you. You turned your head to get a glance at the person causing the noise. There was a man trailing not far behind you, wearing a fedora and a trench coat.
You quickly turned your head back around and started walking faster. Almost immediately after you hear the mans footsteps speed up to match your own.
You look further up the street and notice the crowd of people not far ahead of you. Being the brave and probably stupid person you are, you decide to confront the man. Maybe you were thinking at the time that he wouldn't harm you so close to possible witnesses. You can't remember why you did what you did.
Waiting until you are a few feet closer to the crowd, you prepare to face the man. With a deep breath, you turn on your heel and come face to face with your follower. You look up at the mans tall stature through narrowed eyes. It only took a second for you to realize that it was the same man from inside the restaurant.
"Can I help you?" He asks, narrowing his eyes to mimic your expression. You hear a faint accent in his voice but can't place it.
"How about can I help you? Why are you following me?" You ask, faking bravery.
"Excuse me?" He asked. You could hear sincere confusion in his voice. "Folllowing you? I'm just trying to get home until you stopped in front of me. I live right there, so if you will excuse me.." He trails off after pointing to an apartment complex a few blocks away.
He moves to step around you but you block his path by stepping in front of him again. The look on his face when you do so is not a pleasant one.
"Bu-but you sped up when I did. Why would you do that?" You ask, stepping back in pure confusion.
"Oh that!" His lips pull up into a smirk as his eyes shine with mischief, "That was just for fun."
"Well then." You state, more to yourself than him. "I'm sorry for the false accusation."
"It's quite alright, don't worry about it. Do you mind if we walk together?" He asks, completely changing the subject. "I assume your home is this way as well?" He motions down the street, the direction you were headed.
"Yes it is. My home is on the block onwards from yours." You nod your head and fall into step beside him. "Shall we?"
He smiles and you both start walking in silence. Your mind starts to wander when you realize something, you don't even know each others names.
"I'm Ana. Analise Anderson." I introduce myself as we approach his building.
"I'm Erik Lehnsherr. It was nice meeting you Analise." He compliments as he comes to a stop outside his residence.
You also stopped and looked up at him. The lighting in the darkening afternoon frames his face and makes him look even more handsome than before.
"I hope we meet again Ana. Please walk carefully on your way home. I would take you there myself to make sure but I have to be somewhere early in the morning." Erik explains with a smile.
When you nod in response to his request, he sends you a cheeky grin and a wink before walking into his building.
As you start walking again, you feel your purse start to shake. It was very odd so you open it up and have a look for what could be doing it. You dug your fingers around and almost instantly, felt cold metal touch your skin. You pulled it out and found a card attatched to the metal pin.
'Meet me here, tomorrow at noon. I look forward to seeing you again. Don't be late. - Erik L.
You stood on the sidewalk confused, looking at the apartment complex next to you. When your mind clears, you grin shyly before turning and walking away. You felt like a giddy, love-sick teenager the whole way home.
