Chapter 23: Back to work

Riley P. O. V

We had already made it into the second month of school and I had called Sara letting her know that I was coming back to work. She was ecstatic to hear that and couldn't wait to see me. After school, I was gunna head over to the Golds and even though, after everything with River, I was honestly excited to see Sara and Scarlett.
As for River, I only spotted him at school a few times, I could tell he wanted to say something when I passed him in the halls. Lucky for me he didn't because I didn't know what I'd say to him or how to respond. I wasn't as mad or sad as I had been back when we fought but I was still frustrated with how he acted. I had a lot of time to think about everything and I honestly was over it. Shaking all my thoughts away, I made my way to the table where Izzy, Colten, and James sat and plopped down beside Colten.

"Hey what's crack-a-lacking my peeps?" Izzy giggles while the guys laughed.
"Hey!" They all said in unison.
"So what's the inside scoop today?" I asked the group as I bite into my sandwich.

"Well..." Izzy started, "Chris Stevens is having a party this weekend, Lila and Derek broke up after 3 years and River Gold is suspended." At that, my head snapped up towards Izzy.
She gave me a 'not here' look and I nodded.

"But I was thinking that we should go to Chris's party!" She continues trying not to gain suspicion from the guys. 
"Umm I have to make sure I'm not working first, but I don't see why not." I shrug looking over at Izzy. She nods and then looks at the boys.

"Guys?"
"Sure, I'm down," James says taking a bite of his carrot.
"Yea, I think I could make that work," Colten says checking his schedule on his phone.

"Perfect! I can't wait!" Izzy squeals. I giggle as both the boys laugh at her excitement.
"Hey, Riles can I talk to you for a sec, well catch up with you guys later!" Izzy calls over to the guys as lunch was just about to end. They nodded and walked off.

"So how are you? Have you seen River?"
"Woah Woah slow down Iz. Didn't you say he was suspended?" I asked confused.
"Well, I don't know for what exactly but a bunch of kids saw him get escorted to the principles office last week and no one has seen him at school since." She says shrugging.

"Huh weird, now that you've mentioned it, I haven't seen him around."
"So you guys are still not on speaking terms?" She asks putting her arm around me.

"No," I tell her with a shrug. "But I told Sara that I'm coming back to work. I have a shift after school." I finish by telling her.

"Are you going to try talking to him?" I groan.
"Ugh, I don't know. I don't really feel like it."
"Oh don't be a baby." She says bumping her hip against mine.

"Iz, I just don't know what to do. I want to talk to him about everything that happened and forgive him but at the same time what if I forgive him and we end up where we are now again." I whine. Izzy laughs and pats my shoulder.

"You won't know unless you try Riles."
"I know I know. I guess you're right. Maybe if I see him I'll say something." I finally give in.
"Just have a talk that's it. And if he acts up again then it just wasn't meant to be. Plus I'm always here. I can act like a mean bad boy River." She says puffing her chest and did some weird contorting thing with her arms. I laugh and smack her.
"Stop that, you weirdo. Come on we are gonna be late to class." She laughs but follows me towards class.

Here I stood at the front door to the Golds. I haven't been here in two months and I was nervous. About River? That was part of it, but I wasn't sure how the rest of his family felt about my temporary leave.

I slowly knocked on the door. I still had the key that Sara gave me but I always felt weird about just letting myself in. So I always just knocked.
