Riley's P. O. V

I stared at myself in the mirror as I fixed my necklace. Today was my mother's funeral and to say I was in a sad mood was an understatement. The last few weeks I had still been grieving but I was getting out more and smiling or laughing with Benji it river and the golds. Today it's didn't seem like that day. I had to speak at the funeral and my tummy was doing summersaults. I was nervous but I knew that my mom would be listening wherever she was. As for our home we began packing up our stuff because we had some potential buyers but nothing was official. I let out a sigh as I looked at my black dress and straightened the bottom, I grabbed a strand of my lightly curled hair and groaned. I really didn't want today to be true. As much as I kept denying that this was real life. I had to be there for Ben and the rest of my family.

"Hey you, almost ready?" I caught River's small smile from the mirror. I stared over at him with a sad smile as he leaned against the door frame.

I looked at myself one last time before turning around and walking over to River.
"I'm ready." I say with a sigh
"Come here." He says leaning off the wall. I walked over to him and he hugged me kissing the top of my head.

"I'll be right by your side the whole time." He says as I get out of his embrace and smile up at him.
"Thanks." Was all I could manage to say to him. He knew that I meant it and smiled at me.

"Come on, let's got." I nodded and we headed out.

"Now Miss Riley Mackenzie, daughter of Grace Mackenzie would like to say a few words." The man organizing the wake pointed over to me as everyone turned to look at me. River squeezed my knee and I gave him a small smile and got up quietly. I slowly made my way up to the front and tried to swallow the lump in my throat that was continuing to grow.

"Um hi, I'm Riley Mackenzie and umm," I took a deep breath to get my thoughts and emotions in line.
"My mother was one of the strongest people I've ever known. When she was diagnosed with cancer it was hard and it took a lot out of her.  But she never showed her pain, she was always there for us and always had a smile on her face. One of my favourite memories that I um would like to share," I paused for a moment.
"There was one day in the summertime where she took Benji and I out for dinner by the boardwalk and watched the sunset. It was something so simple yet perfect. I would think about that day whenever I was upset. She use to tell me everything would fall into place and that we would live happy lives. I loved her so much and I will continue to love her forever, I-" I choked on my words.

"I, umm, sorry. I just want to thank you all for coming and for sharing your condolences." I smiled and nodded my head before getting off the stage and walking back to my seat. I sat back down beside River and Benji. Benji gave me a sad look as River wrapped his arm around me.

The rest of the service went fine with friends of my mom and family speaking about the great things my mom did and their favourite memories they shared with her. I was relieved when it was over. I couldn't wait to get home.

"Hey you okay?" River asks as we are all over to his car.
"Yea, I'm just exhausted. I just want to get home and take a nap." He chuckled and leads me towards his car.

The next few days were the same. The only good news that came in was that my childhood home was sold. I was upset but the Gold's has been so helpful and kind to opening their home to us. We had all our stuff moved in tot the guest rooms. We listed most of our furniture online and has some buyers. I spend most of my time at school doing my own thing. Of course I sat and chatted with Izzy and James and River, but I was still slightly grieving. When I wasn't at school trying to get through tests and exams, I was stuck in my room or rivers doing school work or watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine. River continued to stay with me for emotional support. I was happy that had him but I did need my space.

"Hey did you want to do something tonight?" River asks coming into my room that night.

I sat there watching Netflix and looked up. I fix my glasses and smiled over at him. I paused the show and moved my laptop out of the way.

"Sure. What were you thinking?"
"Well we could go out and get some food. I know this really cool dinner not too far from here." He says taking a seat beside me.
"Mhmm sure, I need to get out for a few hours." I tell him with a smile. He gave me a smile back and grabbed me hugging me.

"Come on get ready and we'll go."
"Can I just wear this?" I ask him as we both looked down at my oversized t-shirt and booty shorts. River laughed.

"Up to you Birdie."
"Maybe I'll put on some pants."
"Good idea. I wouldn't want you getting hyperthermia." I laughed.
"I'll go start the car. Meet you out there in 10 minutes." I nodded my head as he left my room.

"This place is so cute." l say looking around the small desses from where we sat.
"It is isn't it? I found this place years ago while doing some stupid job for my dad. It kind of became my spot where I come to think or just sit here." I smile over at him.

"So this is your personal sanctuary?" he smiles over at me.
"Yea, I guess you could call it that" he says playing with his napkins.

"So I know these past few weeks have been chaotic but I want to not focus or think about that anymore. I want things to go back to normal and not be a thorn stuck in your side."

"Riley you haven't been a thorn stuck-" but I cut him off.
"River it's true but I'm tired of crying and feeling helpless, sooo we are gonna hang out and I want you to tell me something about that no one knows." I tell him putting my chin in my hands. River laughed over at me.

"Okay, what do you want to know?" He asks.
"Something no one knows." He sat back and thought for a moment.

"Here's one, so I've been saving my money to be able to travel the world and buy my mom and sister a nice house." He tell me. I give him a confused look.

"Don't you have the money and a beautiful house already?" He sighs.

"The money is mostly my dads and mothers but the house we live in was purchased by my father. I don't like the idea of my family living in a house that was bought with drug money." He tells me as his jaw clenches.

I placed my hand over his and gave him a reassuring smile.

"It's pretty amazing that you would do that for your family." He smiled over at me and grabbed my hand in his giving it a squeeze.
"So why about you? Tell me something about you know one knows." I thought for a moment.

"Okay, no one really knows this but I've been thinking of applying to school for photography but I've had this idea about applying for medicine to help children who are going through cancer. But it's just me thinking crazy thoughts." River shook his head.

"That's not crazy, I think that such a great thing." He tells me. I smile and cover my face in embarrassment.

"You are amazing and anything you do will me amazing." He says removing my hands from my face. I laugh softly.

"Thank you." I tell him genuinely. He smiled. Before we could say anything else a waitress came up ago our table.

"Hey there, what can I get you guys?" She says with a smile.

The rest of the night went great and River and I couldn't stop making jokes and laughing. I truly felt like myself again and I was happy.
