Chapter 3
"Jesus Malfoy," I muttered as I tried to discreetly wipe my eyes. "Can you please do me a favor and get away from me?"
"Ooh, little missy's got a temper," Malfoy sneered as he sat next to me.
"What do you think you're doing?" I asked, shuffling away from him.
"Yeah, typically when somebody is just casually having a mental breakdown, you check to make sure they're not going to pass out," he said. I laughed hoarsely.
"When have you ever cared about anyone, Malfoy?" I asked, trying to hide my embarrassment of him seeing me like this. He snickered.
"It's funny watching you try to be strong when you're clearly fragile."
"Oh, really?" I asked, my temper getting the better of me. I whipped around and gave him a good punch in the jaw. He collapsed to the floor, not expecting it at all. "How's that for fragile?!" I cried as he yelped in pain. "Learn who to pick your fights with, jerk," I hissed in his ear before I stomped off.
...
"Audrey, as punchable as Malfoy's face is, it doesn't mean you can actually punch it!" Cassady reprimanded me as we sat in our favorite hiding place, the Room of Requirement. We sat on the long purple couch that always showed up when we said we needed somewhere to talk.
"Yeah, I know. I kind of feel bad about it," I said as I propped my feet up.
"Really?!" Cassady asked in shocked.
"No," I responded with a laugh. Cassady snickered.
"You do realize that you're gonna get in huge trouble, right?" she said. I snorted.
"Wouldn't be the first time," I muttered under my breath.
"Why'd you even punch him anyway? And why did you freak out on Hermione? I'll have you know that I was having a very important moment with Sean, and you totally killed the vibes."
"Oh yeah, because your tongue going down his throat in public is so intimate," I said, rolling my eyes.
"Hey!" she exclaimed, looking hurt. "My relationship with Sean is totally intimate. So what if we like to... show off once in a while?" I gave a whoop of laughter.
"Yes. You only snog in the, let's see...dining hall, courtyard, the occasional classroom..."
"It was an abandoned classroom, thank you very much!" Cassady retorted, sticking her tongue out at me. "And hey! Why am I the one getting reprimanded here? You're the one who punched a guy in the face! Why did you punch him anyway? And what did Hermione say to make you so upset? You completely freaked out." I laid down on the couch and slammed a pillow on my head.
"Ahhh! So many questions!" I screamed, my voice muffled. "You know I can't take all of your interrogations!" My head slowly came up from under the pillow. I fumbled around to change the subject, not wanting to tell Cassady what Hermione had said. "Funny word, interrogation. It means 'questioning.' Coincidentally, you can have an interrogative sentence, which means a sentence that ends with a question mark. Funny, right?" I said, a fake smile plastered on my face. Cassady shook her head.
"You're trying to change the subject. Quite unsuccessfully, I might add," she said. I put my head in my hands, searching for something to say. If I told her what Hermione said about Dad, it would freak her out. As the eldest, I always felt a responsibility to keep everyone calm, and deal with all the turmoil by myself.
"She... she was insulting Timmy," I said, using the first person that came to mind. I wanted nothing other than to talk to Timmy, but I knew that Cassady would lock me in here until she found the truth. One great thing about my Ravenclaw sister was that she never gave up. As great of a trait as it was, it was extremely inconvenient for me, the most secretive person on the planet.
