The next morning, I woke Draco up by poking him in the ribs and yelling "IT'S CHRISTMAS!!!" at the top of my lungs. Christmas was my favorite day of the year, and my excitement was always over the top.
"Are you like this every year?" he mumbled as he rolled over to face away from me.
"I hate to break it to you, but yes," I said. "Now there are PRESENTS WAITING FOR US. Let's go."
He let out a chuckle and rubbed the sleep out of his eyes. We stumbled downstairs, where my mother was making eggs and sausages. It smelled delectable.
"Happy Christmas, Mummy!" I cried as I ran up behind her and gave her a giant hug.
"Happy Christmas, Audrey," she said. "Breakfast will be ready in a few minutes. Your sister is still asleep."
"I can fix that," I said, determined. "I will have her up in no time."
"Honey, no, let her sleep," Mum said, although she couldn't help but smile. "She had a long night."
I frowned. "Fine," I said with a huff.
"Do you want to go for a walk, Audrey?" Draco asked. "Until your sister wakes up?"
"Sure," I said. "That sounds nice."
"You kids be careful," Mum called as we put on our coats and slipped out the door. "Don't go too far."
We walked down the road to the entrance to the beach, where the pavement turned into sand. Even though it was cold, I took off my shoes and let my feet sink into the sand. It was cold, but refreshing.
"Let's go down by the shore," said Draco. I nodded and followed him down to the shoreline. The water grazed my toes, and I shivered as the chilly ocean breeze brushed my skin.
"I got you a present," Draco said quietly. I looked at him in surprise. When in the world would he have found time to buy me a Christmas present? This year had been so crazy, I had assumed that any gifts would be coming solely from my mother.
"You did?" I asked. He nodded and held out a small, navy box with a white ribbon.
"I really hope you like it," he said. I didn't know what to say, so I just gently took the box and began to open it with shaky fingers. I gasped when I opened the box to find a silver ring with a heart-shaped ruby gem in the center.
"Oh my..." I whispered.
"Look at the inside," he said softly.
I held the ring close to my face and squinted my eyes. Engraved on the inside of the ring were the words, I promise. I looked up at him as my eyes filled with tears.
"We've been through so much, you and I," Draco said, his voice shaking slightly. "You stuck by me during the lowest time in my life until... until I pushed you away. But by some miracle, I got you back. And I want you to know that I will never give up on you... I promise."
I opened my mouth to speak, but no words came out. As I looked at him, I realized the truth in what my mother had said to me mere days ago. Draco and I were truly right for each other.
"It's beautiful," I said, my voice coming out as a whisper. "Thank you, Draco."
I gently took the ring out of the box and slid it onto my left ring finger. I held my hand up to look at the ring in the sunlight. The light bounced off the ruby gem, and its shine was almost blinding.
"Wow," I said again. "Look at it in the light."
Draco smiled. "I picked it out myself. I insisted on the finest ruby they had."
