The spell hit me before I could even register what happened. I fell to my knees, and a dull pain spread throughout my chest as Ginny held the curse on me, her eyes fixed in concentration.
"No," I whined, but my voice came out quiet. I was losing control over everything: my movements, my body, even my voice.
"Let's see how high and mighty you are now, Cliffton," Ginny snarled as she twisted her wand, hard, and I came to stand abruptly on my feet.
"Help," I managed to whimper, but the curse was air-tight. She had me.
"STOP THIS AT ONCE," Amycus bellowed, sending a curse through the air towards Ginny, but Neville deflected it for her. Neville and Amycus began to duel, and Ginny held her curse on me.
I knew the Imperius curse was powerful, but I had no idea how painful it was. A stinging sensation spread throughout my limbs, leaving me as limp as a rag doll. I was still conscious, technically, but completely powerless, as if my mind were empty.
"What should we have her do?" Ginny asked the class. "How about a nose-dive?"
She whipped her wand down to her side, and I followed, tumbling down face-first on the floor. I fell on my nose, and I heard a sickening crunch. A pool of deep red blood emerged underneath me, and I knew that my nose must have been broken.
Somewhat surprisingly, I couldn't hear anyone laughing. I could hear the sound of curses flashing left and right as Neville kept Amycus at bay, and I could hear some of the Slytherin students screaming for Ginny to stop, but no one laughed.
All of a sudden, the curse broke, and the stinging sensation in my limbs subsided. I laid sprawled on the floor, and the pain in my nose grew until it was almost unbearable. Shakily, I pressed myself up to sit on the floor. When I opened my eyes, the room began to spin and I started to see double. I put my head in my hands and closed my eyes again, and I could feel blood from my nose soaking my robes.
"Audrianna?" Amycus called over to me. I opened my eyes and blinked hard, trying to force my vision to go back to normal. "Stay there while I deal with them."
I couldn't do anything but nod. If I stood up, I would faint, so I had no choice but to sit there like a fool. Like a weakling.
Despite the blurriness, I could see Amycus begin to drag both Ginny and Neville out of the room.
"You're going to wish you hadn't done that," he hissed as he took them to whatever terrible punishment room they had set up.
"I doubt it," I heard Ginny say.
"Don't speak too soon, Weasley. You attacked a Death Eater. We've been going easy on you lot since term started, but you've proven to be a special case. I would administer the torture curse myself, but I'll let my sister have the two of you. She will be so pleased."
Amycus whipped his head back to the rest of the students, as if he had forgotten they were still there. "Class dismissed," he barked, and the students stood up to leave. By that point, my vision had cleared, and I was left sitting in a small pool of my own blood.
Everyone stared at me for a few agonizing moments, but still, no one laughed. On the contrary, they looked absolutely miserable, and I couldn't blame them. I locked eyes with my sister, and shook my head slightly. As badly as I knew she wanted to, she couldn't help me. I assumed it was she who broke the Imperius curse, but she couldn't do any more than that. It was how things had to be.
She looked like she wanted to scream with frustration, but I gave her a nonverbal look to tell her it was OK. She bit her lip and started to move towards me, but then turned on her heel and left.
