I was making my way back to the cafeteria when Luke came jogging through the hallway, probably ready to give me some words of wisdom.
"What happened?" He asked looking around. "Where'd she go?"
"I don't know. She left", I said blankly.
"And you didn't go after her?!" Luke almost yelled.
"She told me to stay away from her", I shrugged.
"And what, Calum, are you fucking stupid?" Luke groaned. "Have you ever seen a fucking movie? What do you think guys do when a girl leaves?"
"They follow her, yeah but -" I answered.
"Yeah and then what happens?" Luke interrupted me.
"I don't know... They make out, say they love each other, and live happily ever after", I said, not understanding what he was trying to say. If Adelaide wanted me to stay away from her, that's what I'd do, otherwise she could get even more upset and I would just continue to fuck things up.
"So? Why did you let her go?" Luke shook his head in desbelief.
"Because that's what she told me to do!" I shot back. "You can't compare movies to real life, Luke", I said shaking my head. "It doesn't work like that".
"Of course I can, movies are based on real life", he frowned. "Calum, you should've gone after her, now she's gonna think you don't care".
"If she doesn't care, then why should I?" I asked.
"Ugh, c'mon, don't be so stubborn", Luke rolled his eyes.
"I'm not being stubborn, I just think that it's better to do what she says. I already ruined this whole thing, I don't want to make it even worse", I shrugged.
Luke groaned loudly, rubbing his forehead with this hand. "Calum, have I taught you nothing?"
"Well, not really, so -" I started to say.
"Shut up", he shushed me.
He folded his arms giving me a disapproving look and I just stared back at him. This was just ridiculous, he wasn't going to change my mind, I had already decided that leaving Adelaide alone was the right thing to do, and even if I did go after her, she would've probably already left school. It was no use. I had to start thinking with my brain, not with other parts of my body. And by that I mean my heart.
Luke sighed. "If you like her, you should let her know", he started. "That'd make everything easier, is more than obvious that she likes you too. So, if you told her how madly in love you're with her, she'd just dump Josh's ass and you guys could be together and be all cute and cuddly".
"It's not that simple", I shook my head.
"And why is that?" Luke asked.
"Because, If she broke up with Josh, her parents would kill her", I mumbled. I couldn't believe I was just thinking about that, I was so mad at Josh that all I could think was how stupid it was for Adelaide to keep dating him. But she had no other option, and I knew that, but I hand't thought about it and I fucked everything up for her.
"What makes you think that?" Luke questioned confused.
"Uh", I sighed. "It's a pretty long story".
"I've got time", Luke nodded.
"I'm really not the right person to tell you this", I admitted.
I always tell Luke everything, but this wasn't about me, and it was pretty personal. I don't think Adelaide would really mind if Luke found out, they were friends, or at least they got along, but still, it was not something I should be telling people about, not even my best friend.
"Oh, so it's a pretty big deal", Luke nodded. "Then there's even more reasons why you should've gone after her", he said quickly.
I raised an eyebrow at him, expecting him to continue.
"If she's in trouble, then she definitely needs help. You could give her that help", he continued.
"But there's nothing I can do about it. I tried to help, look where it got me", I motioned to the empty hallway. "And let alone where it got her".
"You weren't helping, you were just upset, and you lost control", Luke corrected me. He was right, but I didn't want to admit it yet. "Maybe being there for her is all the help she needs", Luke shrugged.
I didn't understand how Luke, out of all people I knew - that wasn't much but still - was the one with the best advice when it came to love. Or whatever this was. He wasn't a guy of relationships, not at all, and he wasn't a manwhore either, but he was more about hooking up, he wasn't really into being with one girl for more than a month. It was pretty impresive how much he knew about all this stuff, but it was probably because he watched to many movies. Yeah, it was definitely that.
"I don't know", I said after a while. "I don't wanna screw things up more than they already are".
"You won't", Luke shook his head. "Give her a day, that'd be enough".
"But what if she seriously meant it? What if she really doesn't want to talk to me ever again?" I asked. I didn't wanna stop spending time with her, I really didn't, but I also didn't want her to hate me, and there was always that possibility if I didn't do what she asked. God, girls are so confusing.
Luke rolled his eyes, obviously tired of my overthinking. "Then it wasn't meant to be. But I'm not gonna let you mope all day, you're gonna do something", Luke stated.
"Luke, I don't know -" I whined.
"Calum", he warned me. He already knew he had won, he knew I was gonna do what he had said.
"Okay, mom", I scowled.
"Okay", He beamed.
