Chapter One | A Volley of Arrows

Annabeth brushed her long hair before tying it up in a braid that went to her waist.

She tied the vest on top of her white long sleeved blouse, tucking it into her woollen tights. She then pulled the short black skirt, knotting the belt around her waist.

Before walking to the door, Annabeth pulled on her leather boots, grabbed her bow, satchel, and quiver. She tucked a knife that had been her mother's into her left boot.

A loud knock on the front door of the cabin made Annabeth jump in fear. "Annabeth, are you alright?" Her father's voice asked.

She burst out of the door like a cannonball. "Sorry, Dad!" She yelled as she ran towards the trees across the path. Her father's cabin was along a path towards the village. The path led them two klicks down to the centre of the village.

Not needing to go down to trade for anything, Annabeth had gone across, delving into the secrecy of the forest.

She sprinted over to a tall oak that overlooked a small stream. Etched into a side were the initials J+A. The "J" stood for Jason and the "A" stood for Annabeth.

Jason was her best and only friend in the Misty Hills. The other girls to "girly" for Annabeth's taste. Her heart belonged in the forest and in the wild.

Climbing onto a low branch, Annabeth, sat there until Jason arrived. Not that she would know when he would arrive. Either he was early or late, it depended on his mother and younger sister.

A resounding crack burst through the eery silence. Tree branches crashed to the earthen floor, a dull thudding sound ringing in her ears.

Jason descended from the tree she was sitting on. "Boo!" She gasped, before falling into the dirt. Spitting a twig out of her mouth, she started to throw around a few colourful words in his direction.

"Aw, c'mon, Soph! I wasn't trying to scare you," Jason pleaded for his life.

Annabeth's ears perked up, the delicate points on the tips of her ears stood rigid. This happened when ever she got angry or she heard something she didn't preferably liked. For example, she hated her middle name: Sophia. The reason was because she shared it with the Empire's Queen's name.

"Don't call me that, Jason!" She shrieked before tackling him to the ground. She had thrown off the bow, quiver, and satchel into a hole in the tree, a place where she put her belongings before training.

Straddling Jason, she hit him in the stomach. "Ow! Annabeth! Gosh, that hurts!" He groaned in pain.

"Whatever," she nonchalantly replied before getting off of him.

"You liked that position didn't you, Annabeth?" He wagged his eyebrows at her. She waved him off.

"You're pathetic and immature and freaking annoying." She addressed him while retrieving her things.

"On second thought, lets not train. We coul-" Annabeth cut him off.

"Shush!" She snapped. "We are going to train! Okay!"

"Yes, ma'am!" Jason saluted her. He pulled out his knife and waved it around, imaging it as a sword.

"Your so pathetic, Jay, that sometimes I worry that your mother dropped you when you were a baby." Annabeth chortled. She pulled her mother's silver knife out of her boot and brandished hers.

They took up their stances, Jason's left foot forward, Annabeth mirroring him.

"So are we just gonna stare at each other, because we-" Jason lunged forward, his knife inches away from her face.

"What were you saying?" He asked, amusement in his eyes.

"Oh, nothing, just trying to tell you about my undying love for you, JayJay." Annabeth replied sarcastically.

"Uh-huh," he replied a full blown smile on his face. His bright green eyes stared into her grey ones.

Annabeth deflected his move, bent over him. "Switching sides now, are we?"

"You could say that." He replied, flipping her onto her back. He pressed his knife to her neck gently. He stepped on her left wrist, her knife barely in her hands.

"Why am I always on the ground?" She asked before wiggling her hand out from his boot and moved his knife away from her neck, jumping into air, swinging her leg out. Kicking him behind his knees and seeing him crumple to the ground. Putting a knee on his chest, Annabeth set her knife against his neck.

"I'm liking this much better." She chuckled.

"Whatever," Jason murmured under his breath. Annabeth placed the knife back in her boot and got off of Jason, sitting on the ground.

The earth shook, a dull thundering sound echoing throughout the forest.

A high shrill erupted from the small birds as a volley of arrows were chucked into the air. Seeing one arrow land millimetres from Annabeth's toe, she jumped up, securing her satchel onto her back. Trying her quiver back onto her belt, she plucked one arrow and nocked it onto her bow.

She let the arrow rip through the air, an ear piercing scream echoing around.

"They've found us," Jason murmured.
