→Elaina
Elaina couldn't help but noticed her lips were chapped. She was chewing on her bottom lip, a nervous habit she had developed quite some time ago, as she awaited the arrival of the train.
Moving to a suburb on the outside of Sydney, a huge step for a shy girl like Elaina, had been one of her life-long dreams. If she had known how difficult it would be to find a job, she probably wouldn't have gone.
Prior to her move she had considered many career options. Fresh out of college with a degree in journalism wasn't a very good place to be, and Elaina needed somewhere to start.
So, that is why, at 7:30 a.m., Elaina waited for the train, earbuds in and music blasting.
Elaina chewed her nails anxiously and walked towards the train that had arrived only seconds ago. People dressed in suits and pencil skirts filed out along with people in practically pajamas.
She waited patiently for the attendant to allow her on. When he gave her the OK, she started toward the back, only to find that those seats were filled.
Men and women continued to take their seats, some sitting down and carrying on a conversation and some popping in earphones and ignoring the person next to them.
As Elaina was just about to give up and plop down next to a fat bald man, a boy with caramel colored curls and a fedora tapped her on her shoulder.
"This seat is open, miss," he said, gesturing to the empty space next to him. Elaina nodded slightly and perched next to him, looking nervously around the train because she could feel the boy staring at her.
"Sorry for being forward, I just assumed you wouldn't want to sit with that guy." He whispered the second part and she gave him a small smile.
Elaina avoided eye contact and small talk with the stranger next to her until began drumming on the seat in front of them. It wasn't until then that she noticed he had plugged in a pair of cherry red Beats and had cranked up music.
Elaina couldn't tell that she had grimaced, but he plucked the headphones from his ears and smiled sheepishly. "Sorry. Sometimes I don't realize that I'm doing it. I get in trouble at work for doing it all the time."
"No, that's ok. Most people just don't drum in public, s'all." Elaina motioned for him to continue and he grinned widely.
"You seem nice," he began. "My name is Ashton, and you are...?" The stranger - Ashton - looked at her expectantly. She folded her hands on her skirt after smoothing the material.
"Elaina." She shook his outstretched hand and smiled. Things were starting to look better on this train by the minute.
