→Ashton
"They seemed to really like you." Ashton commented off-handedly, flopping onto the bed in the guest room of Michael and Calum's apartment. Luke had been so gracious as to take the couch.
"I'm glad. When we walked into the pizza shop and they mauled you I was terrified." she admitted shyly. Elaina climbed into the bed as well and leaned her head back against the headboard. Ashton easily slid an arm around her waist and pulled her into his lap. She snuggled up to him, content.
Silence overtook the room, other than the faint noise of some cheesy, late-night television show that the others were watching in the living room.
There was so much Ashton wanted to say. He knew he loved Elaina, so much more than words. He had known first night they fell asleep in Ashton's bed together, when she had told him about her life in Canada, her fondness of their culture but hatred of their government. The way her eyes lit up as she talked about her childhood home and they way they fluttered shut as sleep overcame her. The way they kissed so passionately, leaving them breathless and happy every time. Everything about her enamoured Ashton in such a complex way.
But the hesitance she showed toward simple gestures - when he offered her a place to stay, her introduction with Luke, even placing his hand on her thigh at the pizza place - kept him from endangering their relationship.
Ashton knew he still had far too much to learn about this beautiful girl with honey-coloured locks and a hand that fit perfectly inside his own. The last thing he wanted to do was scare her off.
As if reading his thoughts, Elaina spoke quietly but surely. "We don't know much about each other, Ash."
He turned his head to study her face, scared to make a wrong move. But her face was full of curiosity and genuine thoughtfulness as she asked.
"There's not much to know," he replied honestly, lacing his fingers with hers. Elaina nudged him, smiling slightly. "There's always things to know."
So Ashton started at the beginning, explaining the situation with his dad leaving and financial troubles, but how his mom cares for him and his brother and sister immensely and did everything she could to meet their needs. He told her about the bad times and the good times. Elaina listened intently the whole time, grimacing when hearing about the bike wreck that landed him in the hospital with several stitches and smiling when he told her about the car all of his family pitched in and bought him for his eighteenth birthday.
When Ashton finished he felt lighter, like showing himself to Elaina made their bond stronger.
"Tell me about you, El."
Elaina swallowed audibly and looked back to Ashton. He could sense her hesitance and placed the hand not intertwined with hers on her thigh.
And then she began her story, using the all-too familiar words of one-night-stands and high school lovers.
"I was an accident."
