→Elaina
"So, where're you from, Elaina? Your accent definitely isn't Australian," Ashton asked, switching positions in his seat so he was facing the girl on his left.. His hazel eyes met hers and she blinked before diverting her attention to her lap.
Tugging at a loose thread on her skirt, Elaina sighed before answering, "I'm from Canada."
Ashton smiled lightly. "Been to Canada once. I was visiting my mum while she was in for work. She had been gone for three months and had to stay three more and I really wanted to try some Canadian bacon."
Elaina snickered at this, finally pulling the thread loose from her skirt. She checked to see which stop would come next and realized that during this time with the curly-haired stranger, she had only two stops left.
"So what brings you to Australia?"
Elaina had three choices: say, "For the change of scenery" as everyone does, tell him why, or dodge the question completely. She leaned toward the third option, still tugging at the hem of her skirt. Ashton probably thought she was completely crazy for messing with the loose-fitting item.
"Oh, my stop is next." this was the perfect opportunity to dodge Ashton's question. His permanent smile faltered slightly, but soon the corners tugged up again.
Ashton fidgeted slightly, Elaina noticed, but didn't say anything. He finally spoke up after thinking a little. "Will I see you again?"
The question shocked and surprised Elaina. Ashton was nice, but they had only barely met. She wanted to reject him, she didn't need friends in Australia. She came here alone, so why shouldn't she dwell in Australia alone? Yet a small part of her longed to see his hazel eyes and golden curls once again.
She sighed. "I don't know, Ashton, but I hope so."
Then the train stopped. Ashton called a small goodbye at her and she turned her head, smiling over her shoulder at his disappointed face. But Elaina had things to do, she didn't need to be distracted by some boy.
A small part of her was still nagging though, scolding her for not getting his number. She brushed it off nonchalantly. Plus, if they were meant to see each other again, it would happen sooner or later.
