→Elaina

Luke expertly slipped out of the room unnoticed when Elaina met Ashton's broken hazel eyes. Elaina cursed him silently for leaving her alone in such a tense situation, but she made this mess and she had to clean it up herself.

They didn't talk for about five minutes, just looked everywhere but each other. Elaina found sudden interest in the newly-cleaned tile, though it still probably needed replaced and not just scrubbed. Ashton picked at a hole near the hem of his shirt.

"Finish getting ready and we'll leave." Ashton broke the thick silence and exited the room, heading toward his own.

She changed, putting on a pair of jeans with a frayed hole at the knee and a warm jumper. Converse-clad feet led her from the bathroom to the doorway where Ashton was perched, idly swiping his finger over the screen of his phone.

Ashton looked up for a few seconds when noticing that Elaina stood next to him. She noticed his normally unfaltering smile had fallen into a straight line. She missed the dimples indenting his cheeks and the warm glow that usually radiated from him.

Though they were fighting, a to Elaina's surprise, Ashton still opened the door for her, and the car door when they came down the lift and to the parking lot. Music Elaina had never heard played softly over the speakers, but Ashton knew all the words as a quietly sang along.

"What is this song?" Elaina asked, not wanting to be confronted about her scene in the bedroom just an hour earlier.

"It's 'Otherside' by Red Hot Chili Peppers." he explained, glancing from the road over to her confused expression. "Guessing you've never heard it? It's a mix CD, something else will come on next."

Elaina waited until another unfamiliar tune began playing. She scrunched up her nose.

"What, you don't like Jimmy Eat World? Where do you come from?" he shakes his head in mock disappointment. "Let's see what's next." he presses the button and finally the strumming of a guitar fills the car and she knows the song.

Hey there, Delilah,
What's it like in New York City?
I'm a thousand miles away, but girl
Tonight you look so pretty, yes you do.

Elaina sang off-key with the words while Ashton sang perfectly in tune. "I like the Plain White T's," she laughed. Ashton chuckeld along, and it seemed as if nothing had ever happened.

When the song ended, stony silence overtook the cab again, and Elaina couldn't decide what to say.

"Ashton?"

He doesn't turn from the road, just humms, signaling Elaina to continue.

"I'm really sorry, you know, about earlier. I don't trust people well, and I guess I'm just scared of rejection." she says quietly.

Ashton peers at her, then focuses on the road again.

"I know."
